They’re like a crazy cast of characters scattered throughout the city—food trucks have become a culinary staple in the Capital City.

Some food trailers even become famous, like Hey! Cupcake. The truck was one of the first on South Congress in 2007. When the folks at Hey! Cupcake heard SoCo ATX Development planned a hotel for the spot, they worked out a deal with the Congress Avenue Baptist Church and opened in their parking lot one month ago.

“We can only grow stronger having a permanent location that people are familiar with that we have more control over,” longtime Hey! Cupcake employee Petey said.

Even though the other trailer owners on South Congress have no control over their future, some are optimistic they’ll find another spot soon.

“I’m confident that everything will be fine, but I hate to go, I love this place,” Tommy Speurlock with the Coat & Thai trailer said.

Trailer owners at the hot spot say they’ve known for years that they’d eventually have to move to make way for a hotel. Last month they received the official notice they’d have to move after the weekend.

“We’re splitting up as far as I know, we’re all going our separate ways,” Speurlock said.

The trailers will host a big farewell party Saturday at 5 p.m. You can support the trailers one last time and listen to live music and entertainment.

Mobile food vendors and connoisseurs both say they think the number of food trucks and trailers has potentially rolled to its peak in Austin.

The South Congress Food Trailer Park, the city’s most recognizable mobile food vendor hub, is scheduled to close soon to make room for a hotel. The expected closure follows years of rapid growth within the local mobile food vendor industry.

The number of registered mobile food vendors in Travis County has grown to more than 1,400 in 2012, up from 955 in 2008, according to the City of Austin Health and Human Services Department. Andy Potter, co-owner of Austin Eats Food Tours, leads guided tours of local food trucks and estimates that out of the licensed mobile food vendors, approximately 600 are currently active in Austin. He said he expects that number to drop.

“I am a bit concerned about the saturation [of mobile food vendors],” he said. “I personally think … about 40 trucks do really well, about 300 make ends meet and the other 250–300 are [struggling].”

Wes Hurt said that when he opened the Hey Cupcake! food trailer in 2007, his friends thought he had lost his mind.

At the time, there were almost no other modern mobile food vendors, and most people could not comprehend the idea of only selling cupcakes out of a trailer, he said.

Hey Cupcake! has since opened six locations, including a new location at 1511 S. Congress Ave.

Hurt said the mobile food vendor industry, which includes movable food trucks and stationary food trailers, has grown dramatically since he opened.

However, he said he does not think that growth is sustainable.

“I think that the market will slowly be thinned out and that the cream will rise,” he said. “This business is way tougher than many people thought.”

Food truck industry at crossroads
The growth of mobile food vendors in Travis County

Food-trailer parks

Despite the expected closure of the South Congress Food Trailer Park and closure of the East Side Drive In Food Trailer Park in 2012, Alex King, manager of the Downtown Austin Food Park that recently opened at 30 N. I-35, said he expects food-trailer parks to continue opening.

“I think there will always be entrepreneurs who want to invest in the culture and see it succeed and find locations,” he said.

King said mobile food vendors benefit from being grouped together because they can share customers and resources. Mobile food vendors also have many ideas or tips they can learn from each other, he said.

Likewise, the food-trailer park landowner gets to collect rent after making an initial investment in getting the permits and installation needed to provide electricity, King said. Some food-trailer parks also set up live music and marketing for the park, he said.

“[Food-trailer parks] create a community environment where everyone can work together and play off each others customers,” he said.

However, King said Austin’s rapid development has made it more difficult to find open land suitable for a food-trailer park. Mobile food vendors were a good option for landowners during the economic downturn, but now that financing is more readily available for bigger projects, the short-term, relatively low-profit option of having a food-trailer park becomes less appealing, Hurt said.

“I think just from a practical standpoint, real estate will become more scarce, therefore decreasing the number of … food trailers,” Hurt said.

Meanwhile, food-trailer parks have opened in Round Rock and Pflugerville. Parks are also planned for Georgetown, Hutto and Cedar Park.

Potter said he expects the saturation of mobile food vendors in Central Austin to cause more food trucks to open outside the city limits.

Brewing partnership

As available, affordable land becomes more scarce, a growing number of mobile food vendors have been opening or operating in collaboration with new or established bars in Central Austin.

Within the past two months, The Bacon Bus opened on the patio of Craft Pride, 61 Rainey St., and The Blue Ox opened on the patio of The Buzz Mill, 1505 Town Creek Drive.

Shilpa Bakre, Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau spokeswoman, said she thinks the area’s food trucks have helped spur the rapid development of the Rainey Street area. By teaming up with a mobile food vendor, a bar does not have to go through the lengthy process of getting food permits and can open sooner, she said.

“One of the reasons [the Rainey Street] district has been able to develop as quickly as it has is because it didn’t actually have to be mired down with the food permitting part of it in getting it up and running,” she said.

Meanwhile, mobile food vendors such as Melvin’s Deli Comfort, 501 E. 53rd St., are operating by themselves in parking lots, while others, such as Garbo’s Lobster Truck, travel around on a daily basis.

Regulations

Austin City Council passed a set of regulations on mobile food vendors in 2011 that increased the inspections and fees on the industry.

Texas Restaurant Association spokeswoman Wendy Saari credited a general lack of conflict between the brick-and-mortar restaurants and mobile food vendors for Austin’s prevalent food truck culture and the regulations that have been put in place.

“I think that the food culture kind of came up here in Austin a lot differently than it did in other cities,” she said. “I think it’s a part of the Austin culture.”

By Garce Salem | The Austin Chronicle

ESK’s Pork Belly Special
PHOTO LUX BAUMANN

If you weren’t looking for it, you could miss it. Paul Qui’s much-anticipated SouthBites food court, full of food trucks hand-picked from Austin and beyond, has no signage, no fanfare, nothing at all, in fact, that touts the wildly popular chef as its curator. SouthBites is all about the food.

The set up is simple: over a dozen trucks parked around a bunch of picnic tables and a small bar inside a fence. Perhaps that’s better than a big neon archway with Qui’s likeness in light bulbs, and certainly more in keeping with his personal style. In fact, the casual feel of the gathering spot takes little attention away from the eclectic and mouth-watering selection of food.

Roasted Vegetable Frito Pie from Foreign & Domestic
PHOTO LUX BAUMANN

First, if you can get in, we suggest parking in the lot at the Mexican American Cultural Center(600 River Street), where there are city meters. Walk the length of Rainey Street to Driskill Street, where you’ll find the entrance (or break in the fence) to the SouthBites food court. Our best advice is to walk the loop of trailers first and then decide on what to eat. There is much to choose from here, so more than one visit is warranted. The trailers open at 11:30 am and keep serving until 2:30 am, so there is plenty of time in a busy day of panels and showcases to hit the court.

SouthBites has no admission fee; just pay for what you eat and drink. We arrived right at the start on Sunday morning, and found the park with only a handful of visitors and the trailers open and ready to go. We found a perfect cafe latte at popupdownunder, the smart little Australian stand, which also offered traditional Tim Tam cookies ($1), tender biscuits with both chocolate filling and coating, and Lamingtons ($3), little sponge cakes coated in chocolate and grated coconut.

Once thoroughly caffeinated, we started with chef Qui’s East Side King’s trailer. Of four items we opted for a sweet bun and pork belly ESK special ($6) with pickles, onions, and cilantro, and crispy little egg rolls on lightly-dressed greens with a spicy mayo sauce ($6). Next, we ventured toForeign & Domestic’s truck offering a menu of three sweet and three savory items. Here we chose the Roasted Vegetable Frito Pie ($6). F&D‘s dish was a fun, healthy-feeling play on the traditional with roasted beets, black beans, Frito chips, cheddar cheese, green onions, and what looked like a dollop of sour cream, but was actually a tangy horseradish sauce that delivered a satisfying pop of flavor.

Keeping to our fairly-healthy ordering pattern, we wandered to Cazamance, where West African fusion reigns, and tried their Couscous Moroccan ($5). The serving was packed with cranberries, parsley, tomato relish, nestled on a hearty bed of mixed greens with cucumber slices. It was light, flavorful, and not what I’d expect from a food truck during South by Southwest.

We left with several sweets in tow, including, of course, a red velvet cupcake from Hey Cupcake! for my daughter. She discovered lots of food options to her liking but few fellow visitors her age. “There are lots of people with badges here,” she informed us. “That’s how you know it’s South by Southwest. Oh, and all the scarves.” Apparently, if you want to blend in like a local, tuck your badge into you jacket and ditch the big scarf.

Whether you’re local or not, a visit (or two) to this understated, but sophisticated mashup of food trailers is worth every step you’ll most likely have to walk to get there. Check out the full list of SouthBites trucks and what they’re offering in Virginia Wood’s On the Range blog.

Some of Austin's most creative and delicious vegetarian and vegan food comes on wheels

By Melanie Haupt | Austin Chronicle

uac N Roll owner Benjamin Miller

You can’t swing a tofurkey in this town without hitting a food truck, but very few are devoted solely to vegetarian and vegan fare. Perhaps even more than brick-and-mortar restaurants, Austin’s food trucks offer local and visiting vegetarians and vegans the opportunity to enjoy the city’s diverse and innovative food scene without having to resort to cobbling together side dishes. Indeed, those who eschew meat and animal products have at their disposal a movable feast of cruelty-free cuisine. Here is a sampling of some of the most creative and delicious offerings from Austin’s dedicated vegetarian and vegan trailers.

Situated in the parking lot of Dane’s Body Shop in Hyde Park, Guac N Roll offers vegetarians of all stripes – and, well, anyone who really likes made-to-order guacamole ($6.50) with locally sourced, non-GMO ingredients – a wholesome post-workout snack or light lunch. The guacs here aren’t traditional; for example, the Guac & Awe is a creamy blend of avocados and mascarpone cheese topped with tomatoes, jalapeños, red onion, crushed plantain chips, and chewy edamame seeds, while Guac the Casbah blends hummus with avocados, adorned with cucumbers, mint, raisins, and toasted sesame seeds. The guacamoles are served with El Lago tortilla chips and a choice of salsa; housemade rice pudding and granitas provide a sweet complement to these hearty noshes. Proprietor Benjamin Miller fitted his chartreuse truck with a sculptural Mohawk, the perfect emblem of this perfectly punk rock approach to fresh, local vegetarian fare.

Billing itself as “a tiny piece of Israel in Austin,” Moses Falafel began its simple, kosher vegan operation in January 2012 on the grounds of the Dell Jewish Community Campus in North Austin, but quickly relocated to the mostly vegetarian Longhorn Food Court on MLK and Rio Grande. As the cart’s name suggests, the menu here is not particularly broad, but the falafel, available in either a full or half pita wrap and served with hummus, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, and pickles, is devastatingly fresh and delicious. Choose the spicy option and get a pop of heat from the zingy Israeli chile pepper sauce called skhug. Owner Samuel Haviv modeled his cart after his father’s falafel restaurant back in Israel, and he is committed to demonstrating the simple pleasures of Israeli cuisine to Austin diners.

Where Moses Falafel emphasizes Israeli cuisine, Julia Hungerford of Schmaltz specializes in Jewish deli food worthy of any vegetarian bubbe‘s recipe box. Tucked away behind Farewell Books (formerly Domy Books), Hungerford’s tiny trailer is ground zero for seitan pastrami Reuben sandwiches, grilled falafel, pickles, homemade kombucha, and quite possibly the best matzoh ball soup to pass these lips. The matzoh ball itself, made with local eggs, clocks in at about the size of a baseball and arrives adorned with a wee sprig of dill, swimming in a rich broth you’d swear was chicken but is completely vegetarian. The soup is only available on Friday and Saturday, but the top-rate sandwiches and guileless hospitality are always on order.

Just a tick north in the now mostly abandoned Hoover’s Soular Food Garden trailer park is theVegan Yacht, a groovy Airstream outfitted to dispense the most amazing vegan invention ever, the freeto burrito ($7). Husband-and-wife team Mike and Danielle blend organic tempeh chili with corn chips, slap it in a tortilla (add vegan Daiya cheese or avocado for $1 more), and press it into a deeply satisfying bundle that serves as a testament to the possibility of pleasure in veganism, especially when you employ the generous cup of Cholula hot sauce that accompanies the wrap. Another “can’t miss” menu item is the Jerome’s Chocolate Banana ($6), a smoothie made with soy milk, cacao, agave nectar, and banana, which pairs nicely with the burrito or shines on its own as an afternoon snack.

For those who prefer smoothies and other fruit-based treats, Blenders and Bowls dishes up health food disguised as dessert. The “blenders” in this equation are smoothies made with fresh-frozen fruit, juices and plant-based milks, and local honey ($4.50-$7.50). The bowls are açai berry blended with fruit juice to the consistency of frozen yogurt and topped with combinations of fruit, nuts, hemp granola, and honey ($7-$10). Perfect for breakfast or on one of Austin’s brutally hot summer afternoons.

Other dedicated vegetarian and vegan food trucks around town include Arlo’s, featuring vegan Bac’n Cheeze Burgers ($7) and Street Tacos made with veggie crumbles ($5). More northerly folks can get their veggie burger fix at Good to Go with a variety of patties made from black beans, hempseed, and even edamame. Over in the North Loop ‘hood, the Vegan Nom offers a wide variety of tacos, while down on MLK Conscious Cravings features a diverse array of vegan wraps seasoned with housemade spice blends. Finally, Nomad Dosa lets you customize your South Indian rice-crepe wrap with flavorful veggie curries and chutneys.

Does the thought of NBC’s upcoming new series Hannibal make you hungry? Yeah, me neither. But the show is having a little fun with its concept at SXSW this weekend, with a Hannibal-themed food truck, which features the image of series star Mads Mikkelsen dabbing his mouth after his own meal.

With Hannibal set to premiere in less than a month, NBC’s been promoting the creepy new series a bit more actively these days. That includes a food truck at SXSW. Series creator Bryan Fuller tweeted a photo of the truck.

What exactly does one feed their fear? Because we all want to know what’s on the menu for a “Hannibal” themed truck, Fuller also tweeted ”Attending #SXSW @SXSW? Be glad you’re not on the #HANNIBAL FOOD TRUCK MENU,” with this photo:

No liver, fava beans and a nice chiantI? It’s probably for the best. In fact, that menu looks seriously tasty, if you can stomach the image of the notorious fictional cannibal on the side of the bus enough to place an order!

Those of us who aren’t at SXSW will have to go without Hannibal‘s tasty treats, but we still have the series to look forward to. Hannibal premieres on April 4 on NBC. More information and the new teasers for the series hereand here

The multi-ethnic kitchen on wheels is making the trip from California to the Capital City for South By Southwest. The food truck will travel nearly 1,400 miles to join the scores of local food trucks that will feed the city during the nine-day festival.

The Austinot is consistently asked about where to find the best Austin food trucks. So we’ve decided to start a search for the best in town. As we run across Austin food trucks that we feel should be on this list, we’ll let you know. All of the posts in this series will start with “Best Austin Food Trucks.”

If you have a food truck to recommend, leave a comment at the end of the article. Tell us the name of the joint, what you like most about them, and where we can find them. We’re always willing to check out something new.

Pecos Tacos Is Among the Best Austin Food Trucks

Austin food trucks abound. With a nearly endless variety of trucks comes the overwhelming task of choosing which one to check out for yourself.

Well, you can never go wrong with a taco. Many Austin food trucks serve them up, but few serve them up like Jesse Catano, owner of Pecos Tacos. The tough decision here isn’t deciding which food truck to get your taco from. It’s finding Jesse and his illusive Pecos Tacos truck.

Jesse Catano, owner of Pecos Tacos

Though many food trucks stake their claim in a trailer yard or depend on a specific area to net them business, Pecos Tacos isn’t one of the many.

Jesse is the Pied Piper of Austin food trucks and he’s been cooking it up for many years – nine, to be exact. Remember when you were a kid and you’d hear the bell or music coming from the ice cream truck? You’d race for your piggy bank and then chase the the truck until it would stop. Pecos Tacos has a similar effect on Austinites.

To say that Jesse has a following would be a gross understatement. His fans are loyal to him. They come to him in droves and call him by name. Funny thing is, Jesse calls most of his customers by name too. He even remembers what they were up to when he saw them last.

Jesse is one of those guys who knows how to build relationships, and does so through fantastic customer service and incredible food. I stood in observation at his truck for a good 45 minutes, as customer after customer came up and interacted with him. It was like watching an old school barber with a stream of longtime clients. All the latest news was passed back and forth and a sense of true relationship was evident.

It wasn’t uncommon for Jesse to state customers’ orders before they even opened their mouths. I even saw several people walk up and order over a dozen tacos in a single order.

Are the tacos really that good? The answer is unequivocally yes.

Here is my suggestion: Start off with two tacos: one Shrimp taco and one Whit taco. Get them the way Jesse makes them…just trust it. The tacos are only $3 on average, so you won’t be breaking the bank.

If you take me up on my suggestion, you’ll be floored by how incredible these tacos are. My personal favorite is the Shrimp taco, but all of Jesse’s tacos are outstanding. My guess is that on the very same visit you’ll be ordering a couple more tacos and experimenting off the Pecos Tacos menu.

Pecos Tacos Location and Information

Pecos Tacos is one of the truly mobile Austin food trucks. It can be found in various locations throughout the week – even throughout the day. I’ll do my best to outline when and where. Bottom line: break out the piggy bank and track this guy down.

Jesse has a steady stream of friends stop by his 6th St. location

Jesse has a work ethic that would shame most of us. You’ll see from his schedule below that he works from early morning to late night in multiple locations throughout the week. It was an honor to meet him, and I know you’ll enjoy meeting him too. Tell him you heard about it on the Austinot. No, we don’t get a commission.

The Pecos Tacos schedule might look a bit crazy. But trust me – it’s worth the hunt. To the best of my knowledge, hours and locations of operation are:

Monday-Friday: Harte-Hanks in the Wells Branch neighborhood (2800 Wells Branch Pkwy) from 8-9 AM
