Still not happy with the small country’s worth of meal options provided by the College Hill food truck scene? Lotus Pepper, one of the newest meals-on-wheels options to hit the corner of Thayer and George and/or Brown and George, is here to help. Offering a six-item menu of Vietnamese cuisine at reasonable prices, Lotus Pepper appears to be shooting for the simple, pleasant vibe of a Mama Kim’s-type establishment. Kind-of-almost-pictures of the menu below. If it looks good, you know what to do–try that shit tonight. Obviously.

PAWTUCKET – You wouldn’t know it by walking by a local mill at lunchtime, but Pawtucket has a law on its books that prohibits food trucks from outside the city from coming in to sell their goods.

Local business owners and mill developers are pushing city officials to change the laws currently on the books prohibiting the popular eateries on wheels.

Len Lavoie, a member of a local developers’ group and the man behind the redevelopment of 25 mill properties in the city, told The Breeze that he and others expect the rules to change soon. According to Lavoie, many believe the ordinance prohibiting outside food trucks came about long ago “because somebody who knew somebody who happened to be in the catering business” got it passed.

The relief efforts continue to come in the wake of Hurricane Sandy

By Abbey Niezgoda | ABC6.com

The relief efforts continue to come in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, but one Rhode Island man is answering the call for help with his food truck.

Tony Hall stocked up his kitchen with donations at Restaurant Depot in Cranston before heading to Staten Island. Many are still without power there after Hurricane Sandy, so Hall is bringing the restaurant to them.

However, once he arrives, he will not be the only cook on his food truck.

“One of our goals is to allow families to come in and actually cook a meal for their family,” Hall said. “Cook it the way they would like it.”

They are small comforts like letting people season their own food that Hall hopes will make a big difference.

“We have an 8 foot long counter so you could have two or three people cooking meals at the same time.”

The set up comes from experience. The windows of his truck are plastered with newspaper clippings about him cooking for the victims of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina.

A new disaster brings a new wish list of donations he needs before he takes off including propane tanks and non-perishables. Strangers dropped of items by the bag and by the truck Thursday. Together they add up to one man’s recipe for relief.

“For a long time I’ve asked myself why I do this,” Hall said. “And I think it is seeing how happy people are when I get there. That makes me happy.”

Hall left for Staten Island Thursday night, but if you would still like to help you can contact him directly at 401-406-1683.

What with Mama Kim’s, Mijos, Plouf Plouf, and various other trucks clogging the sidewalk outside of Metcalf, it may be hard to believe the food truck bubble hasn’t burst on Thayer Street yet. Nevertheless, yet another one has opened for business. Starting this past Tuesday night, the Narragansett restaurant Clam Jammers has been operating a food truck on the corner of Thayer and Waterman. If not for grey-eyed/clouded Athena, they would’ve been around more this week, but the truck’s operators promise we’ll be seeing more of them in the future.

One might be skeptical of the preposterously out-of-season menu of half and whole clam rolls, lobster rolls, “stuffies” – these are stuffed quahogs, right? – fish & chips, and more, but Clam Jammers delivers. Its clam roll ($10, $5 for half) offers a healthy (?) portion of freshly-fried clams with tartar sauce and lettuce on a gently-toasted, not-so-gently-buttered roll. Great with a little bit of vinegar.

Maybe it was just because today felt like summer compared to the early taste of winter we got on Wednesday, but something about thevaguely Moxie-reminiscent logo of Clam Jammers just seemed inviting this afternoon, and the truck boasted a respectable line at 1:00 pm. This truck could pick up some of the slack from the long lines at Mama Kim’s because, unlike Plouf Plouf, it promises a pretty quick turnaround time on your order. Don’t let your association of fried clams with summer fool you – Clam Jammers is a welcome addition to the Thayer Street food truck culture.

COURTESY CARRIE ALBRECHT VIBERT

PROVIDENCE – What do you have planned for lunch today? If you’re thinking of heading to one of the local food trucks, a new face has joined the ranks.

Rocket Fine Street Food had its first day in Providence on Wednesday, serving food on Thayer Street for lunch and at the Pawtucket Winter Market for dinner.

The menu consists of many comfort food staples – mac and cheese, grilled cheese, tomato soup and a variety of burgers, including the Parisienne (think caramelized onions, Gruyere, aioli).

Owners Patricia Natter-Meneguzzo and her husband Joe Meneguzzo first opened Rocket in their hometown of Torrington, Conn., in 2010.

Both had been living in Miami, working in marketing and printing, respectively, and wanted to do “something” food-related but, she said, opening a full-fledged restaurant was “a little daunting” – so they quit their jobs and headed home.

“[Owning a food truck] is 10 times more enjoyable than we thought. It’s a whole different dynamic with food trucks. [The customers] enjoy meeting the person that’s cooking their food.”

“In the winter, it’s very quiet [in Torrington], and we really wanted Rocket to be a year-round business,” she said. “It’s a food-truck friendly city; people seem to really enjoy food here – so here we are!”

Their schedule, for now, is “up in the air,” but Rocket will post its locations on Facebook and Twitter – @rockettruck – every day. Natter-Meneguzzo also maintains a blog with the menu and locations.

Other local food trucks – which include Mijos Tacos, Mama Kim’s Korean BBQ, Hewtin’s Dogs, Like No Udder, and Poco Loco Tacos – have been “very helpful” and welcoming, she said.

“We come from the idea that when food trucks get together – it creates a destination … a mini event,” Natter-Meneguzzo added. “We really feel like food trucks are beneficial for cities like Providence … to create buzz when there are activities.”

“There’s a life in [Providence] even in the winter – that was what we were looking for,” Natter-Meneguzzo said. It will be Rocket’s first time as a “true” street vendor, since in Connecticut they used park in a private parking lot and were not restricted to the 2-hour street parking permit limit.

The best pulled pork on the East Side.

For those of you who’ve dared to venture a few blocks off Thayer, you’ll have no doubt had the pleasure of tasting the delicious food of United BBQ. For those of you who haven’t, you may have missed your chance to have some of the best BBQ around as the eleven employees of United BBQ were informed on Thursday night that the restaurant would close down after the weekend.

Located on Ives Street, United BBQ opened three years ago to a string of overwhelmingly positive reviews. Its achievements include winning the 2011 “RI’s Best Barbecue” award from the Providence Phoenix. Although known for its barbecue, the restaurant was also popular with Brown’s eco-friendly students due to its wide variety of vegan and vegetarian options, such as its “Tofurkey” Kielbasa Sandwich.

When asked about her thoughts about the restaurant closing, United BBQ employee Jasmie, who has worked at the restaurant since its opening, said, “Working here has been great. I’ll really miss working here. Everyone’s like a family here.” The owners currently do not have plans for the restaurant after its closing and many employees are still unsure of what to do after United BBQ closes. News of the restaurant’s closing have also not been widely circulated as many students have remained oblivious to United BBQ’s plight.

Alas, the near-romantic relationship that many upperclassmen have had with United BBQ must come to an end. We can only hope that some day, a Southern BBQ food truck decides to drive up College Hill and fill that hole left behind by United BBQ.

Rhode Island's burgeoning food truck scene has picked up two hot properties lately, and both are worth checking out

By Food Team | GoLocalProv.com

Rhode Island’s burgeoning food truck scene has picked up two hot properties lately, and both are worth checking out as they set up shop on the streets of Providence. Finally, it seems, true food truck culture is here to stay.

Jake’s Sweet Meat BBQ

Adding some southern zing to the scene, the inventive minds at Jake’s are putting out a fantastic array of traditional and creative BBQ sandwiches and platters. After chef stints in other states including Florida, Jake and Charity Amenta returned to Rhode Island for nearby grandparent access for their first baby, and popped up a business. “A barbecue truck is what Providence needed,” Jake said, adding that he had considered opening a gourmet Italian sandwich shop, but, as he says, “there is one on every block.”

The daily menu has standard crowd-pleasers like pulled pork, smoked chicken, and beef brisket for $6-$8, and combos for $8-$10. Sweet tea adds another genuine Southern dimension. So does Jake’s recipe for his meatloaf–straight from his grandmother. Daily specials include interesting variations. Yesterday, Jake’s featured a fried pork chop with chipotle honey mustard and cheese for $3.50.

Parked Tuesday-Friday @ Kennedy Plaza from 9am-7pm. Check their Facebook page for daily specials, up to date locations, and event info. For large orders, you can call ahead at 860-202-4155.

Mijos Tacos

When a California-based chef brings back some LA food truck culture with him to the streets of Providence, good things are in store. That’s the promise with Mijos Tacos, which just began parking up near Brown University in the evenings, enjoying the upscale truck ambience anchored by Mama Kim’s Korean food.

Chef Peter Gobin offers what he calls “a Los Angeles style taco truck with traditional Mexican street food.”
Mijos offers fresh tastes that Californians know and love–among traditional tacos, burritos, and guacamole, look for chili verde con carne with crema and warm tortillas, or chorizo, or shrimp with pickled chiles. Mijos also pops up brunch on weekends, offering hangover-fixers eggs and salsa plus breakfast burritos.

Parked most mornings near Faunce Arch next to the Brown University Campus, most nights in Fones Alley off Thayer Street. Check Facebook and Twitter for exact timing and specials.
