"They are hard to enforce and full of violations." says Zoning official and building inspector Nick Saluzzi.

The city would approve this tacky digital sign to represent it's community, but doesn't want gourmet food trucks?

Woodcliff Lake is set to introduce an ordinance that would restrict the use of mobile kitchens, otherwise known as food trucks.

Zoning official and building inspector Nick Saluzzi proposed the ordinance at the May 2 Mayor and Council meeting, based upon a recommendation by the Board of Health, since “they are hard to enforce and full of violations.” Saluzzi objected to the soliciting nature of food trucks and didn’t want them parking on the street to sell, but he also worried that if permitted, they would move from building to building.

Many on the council were afraid that food trucks would blight the town and did not see a need for them between the mall, its “immaculate AAA office parks,” in attorney Mark Madaio’s words, and residential areas.

Councilman Jeffrey Hoffman was against prohibiting food trucks outright. If BMW wants to license a truck for its employees, he reasoned, why should the council stop them? Plenty of corporations contract out vendors to provide an optional food service for employees, he said.

A large corporate complex like BMW has its own employee cafeteria, responded Saluzzi, and he felt that food trucks would provide unwanted competition in addition to being a burden.

Hoffman, however, didn’t agree.

“I think we ought to license them and give them the opportunity to be here,” he said.

Mobile kitchens have a stove or an oven and are used for actual cooking, explained Saluzzi, not carts that sell already prepared food. The ones under discussion are the kind that sell falafels or hot dogs.

Although Woodcliff Lake does not have a mobile kitchen problem, there have been a few requests by vendors to park on the street and sell to employees. Under the current bylaws, the vendors are told to file with the Board of Adjustment, which usually “scares them off,” said Saluzzi.

It was eventually decided that mobile kitchens should be prohibited in residential areas and only allowed to be parked on corporate campuses with a permit. The ordinance will be rewritten to reflect the restriction toward residential areas, and is expected to be introduced at the council meeting on May 16.
