Baltimore, MD: Food Trucks Rallying All Weekend Long

Taste: I went hoping to the get the Korean kimchi tacos, but they were out. Instead, I tried fish tacos and Buffalo chicken tacos. If you're not a fan of fried food, these are underwhelming. Next time, I'll go for the Crab Cone, a crab cake sitting on Old Bay-covered French fries, which seems like a diabolically delicious idea.

Menu: There's good variety here: tacos, salads, seafood and desserts.

Price: The crab cone costs $12, but most dishes are less than $10.

Wait: Less than five minutes.

The Wild Dog Cart shows just how unimaginative most hot dog carts are. Take the Mexican dog, for instance. It’s got green chilies, cheese, salsa, and crushed corn tortilla chips. Now that’s how you make a hot dog!

Baltimore's top 10 food trucks
Two years ago, you could count the number of Baltimore's food trucks on one hand. For most people, "food truck" meant the dude on the corner slinging crappy hot dogs -- or, if you were lucky, a passable gyro.

How did we survive?

These days, Baltimore has something like 20 food trucks, serving everything from high-end cupcakes to Korean BBQ pulled pork tacos. They're all over the city, even as far out as Towson and Owings Mills. But they're not all delicious.

To separate the best from the rest, we sampled dishes from every regularly touring food truck in town. When ranking the top 10, we took a few factors into consideration:

How good is the concept behind the food truck? Is the menu interesting, and the food tasty? Do they take credit cards, and are they good about updating Twitter and Facebook with their location?

Here are the 10 that rise above the rest of Baltimore's ever-growing food truck fleet. (Karl Merton Ferron, Baltimore Sun /July 31, 2012)

The evening food truck rally, which was running on a weekly schedule back in the fall, is kicking off the 2013 season on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Castle in Hampden, on 34th Street and Keswick Avenue.
