Special to The Palm Beach Post

It’s impossible to miss the bright pink food truck, beckoning from across whatever parking lot or food truck rally it’s currently visiting.

But it’s only when I’m staring at the menu that I feel as if someone’s holding up a mirror to my own kitchen.

Owners Angel and David Dunn make cupcakes with candied cayenne bacon. And cookies baked with lavender. Their pecan pie is infused with bourbon and they sell something described simply as “chocolate crack.”

These are bakers after my own heart.

Not to be cast in the role simply as a baker’s truck, the Flour Power food truck also sells a mean chicken mole with some pretty good fries.

But, oh, those baked goods.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-43951" alt="The chicken mole sandwich served with crispy French fries from Flour Power food truck. Photo by Libby Volgyes/Special to the Palm Beach Post

The bourbon infused pecan pie – one bite reminded me of my grandmother Mary’s pecan pie, two bites reminded me of every boozy revelry. The interplay of flavors with bourbon and pecans worked so well that after three bites, while I didn’t think it was such a good idea to be driving anywhere, I was convinced they were some very, very good pie bakers.

Should you see the “chocolate crack” at the next food truck rally, buy as much as you can. It’s utterly delicious.

And while the truck is based in Fort Lauderdale, the Dunns bring it up to Palm Beach County frequently. In fact, Flour Power will be in Wellington on Thursday.

The food truck event happens at Wellington Amphitheater, 12150 Forest Hill Boulevard from 5 to 9:30 p.m.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-43953" alt="A sampling of delicious desserts offered by the Flour Power food truck, including a Bourbon Infused Pecan Pie and a cupcake made with candied cayenne bacon. The Food Truck Invasion features 15 to 20 trucks and will be held every Thursday from 5:30 pm until 10:00 pm. (Lindsay Moore, FPG / November 28, 2012)

The village of Wellington has done it again. They have created a fantastic event right in our own backyard, or more precisely our back parking lot. Wellington certainly has no shortage of fine restaurants, but since when do they come to you? Now they do. Welcome foodie trucks.

I don’t use the term food trucks because these trucks are not the “roach coaches” that pull up to construction sites or factories. These foodie trucks feature some of the best, and by the way, reasonably priced meals that any foodie or regular person could dream of. Every Thursday evening you can enter this food paradise and take your pick from more than 15 unique mobile high-end restaurants.

Located at the Wellington Amphitheater, the opening night really brought out the crowds, marked by a loud DJ at one end, and for some reason, the Solid Waste Authority at the other. Walking along with the many hungry people and happy dogs, I can’t imagine any person not finding something for them.

From fair food, including fried Twinkies (which are probably secured in a vault now), to some more healthy venues, the variety was simply amazing. I wound up cheating on my diet just a little. The first meal I ordered was the Lamb “Mexican Gyro,” which was made in a Colombian truck. The show put on was fun too; this truck had salsa music playing and some guy whose job was simply to dance. Both the food and the show were an absolute delight.

Next I moved on and had garlic wings. Made like Buffalo wings, these featured the more traditional elements of Buffalo wings and added garlic. The garlic really added the needed punch.

All in all this is a must-attend event. I saw quite a few friends from around the town, and I think that if you live in town you will, too.

I wanted to wish all of Wellington a very happy belated Thanksgiving. While this may have become a day to over indulge in food of all sorts, not a bad thing for a food critic, it should still remain a day to think about how fortunate we truly are. We live in a free nation, we have freedom of speech, freedom of religion and so many more things that others do not. Learn to count the blessings that you have, because in any instant they can be gone. And always try to improve your lives and the lives of others.

Remember what this season should truly be about, not fairytale Dicken- inspired songs, nor waiting in tents at Best Buy or BrandsMart. Learn to appreciate family, friends and this wonderful little city. The problems we face would be a paradise to so many in the world. And that my friends is “food” for thought.

The Stocked N Loaded food truck was among those at Wellington’s first Food Truck Invasion on Nov. 8. Here, it does business at the Wellington Green Market on Saturday afternoon. (Damon Higgins/The Palm Beach Post)

The Food Truck Invasion roared into the suburbs last week, filling the parking lot of Wellington’s amphitheater with delicious aromas – and a crowd of hungry people.

It’s a scene sure to be repeated every Thursday evening as truck owners and organizers agreed Wellington was ripe for the invasion.

“I’m so excited. It’s nice because it brings all the community out, and it’s a nice night,” said Jamie Shapiro, who was dining on a turkey parfait – baked beans, shredded turkey and coleslaw, served in layers in a plastic cup.

Offerings were abundant – burgers, barbecue, yogurt, sandwiches, Mexican fare, cupcakes, and French fries. And if all that sounds a little too conventional, check out the gator bites from Stocked n Loaded, which also makes regular appearances at the Wellington Greenmarket. With the diversity, a family of four like Shapiro’s can find something to satisfy everyone’s palate.

“We were looking around, and I found Philly Grille,” said first-grader Spencer Shapiro. “Me and (sister) Carley wanted chicken fingers, and we got them.” More like entire chicken fillets, the portions were large enough to share. Spencer’s verdict: “Fantastic.”

With a DJ providing music, the scene was a mini street festival. Wellington’s events coordinator Joe Picconcelli said at least once a month, there will be live music on the amphitheater stage during the Food Truck Invasion, slated to run every Thursday at the amphitheater from 5:30 to 10 p.m. “The nice thing about this is the food is all made fresh,” he said.

If you think some of the trucks look familiar, they might be: Bite Gastrotruck’s gourmet burgers have won awards in food truck competitions, and the Mobile Culinary Kitchen, a Mexican cantina with neon lights and Latin tunes, is featured with LeBron James in a commercial for a new Samsung cell phone, event coordinator Steve Simon said.

At the invasion, BFF stands for Best French Fries, and judging from the constant line at the order window, Frydaddy Food Truck apparently delivers on the promise. Regular or sweet potatoes come baked or fried, with topping choices not usually found on a fry menu.

“These are so good,” said Mayor Bob Margolis, offering a share of his “naked” fries.

“This is amazing,” Shaun Santoro of The Acreage said of the event while waiting in the fries line. I have been looking forward to coming to one of these. My husband’s getting sweet potato fries. I’m saving room for the cupcake truck.”

At Dulce Gourmet Cupcakes, Liana Martinez sold out by the night’s end.

“Our best-seller tonight was the red velvet, and rosewater pistachio was a big seller as well.”

As news of the invasion spread, a late-night crowd came through.

“One lady bought a half-dozen doggie froyos because she saw it on the news,” said Ivan Breger, owner of JOJI frozen yogurt truck, providing treats for human and canine alike.

At around 9 p.m., Ryan Hentz of Fort Lauderdale was dining on a Mac n Cheeseburger from the Loaded Burger food truck, while his friend, Nicole Ginnard of Hypoluxo went for a lighter sandwich.

“We tend to go to a bunch of food truck events together,” Ginnard said.

Alejandro Alvarez of Wellington had spent most of the night at the invasion, unable to choose just one meal.

“I’ve tried probably five different things,” he said. “The Cuban quesadilla is tops, the Mexican gyro is great. And this skirt steak from Che Grille is fantastic.”

He’ll be back to the Food Truck Invasion, he said.

“It’s the greatest idea to hit Wellington since … maybe the mall.”

Wellington has caught on to the food truck craze with more than 15 gourmet and unique trucks offering everything from duck sandwiches, twisted quesadillas, burgers and shakes to gourmet cupcakes and frozen yogurt featured at its weekly Food Truck Invasion.

“It was something I saw while in Fort Lauderdale and thought it would work here in Wellington,” cultural programs and facilities manager Joe Piconcelli said. “We are always looking for something different to add to the events out here.”

Since opening the amphitheater several years ago the village has worked to provide family friendly programming to the site. This is just one of nearly 100 events that are scheduled for the amphitheater this coming year, Piconcelli said, adding that all village-sponsored events are free to attend.

Organized by Miami-based Food Truck Invasion, between 15 to 20 trucks from South Florida will roll into the Wellington Amphitheater, 12100 Forest Hill Blvd., from 5:30 to 10 p.m. every Thursday, except Thanksgiving, through May.

“There will be different trucks each week,” Piconcelli said. “It is a chance for guests to try culturally different foods all in one place.”

During last week’s inaugural invasion more than 100 guests enjoyed music and a variety of food. At future invasions the village has live entertainment scheduled, Piconcelli said.

Although the food on the trucks is gourmet the prices averaging between $5 to $10.

The village will take the second week of food truck fun to kick off its new recycling program with an America Recycles Day event.

The new program brings 20 bins to various locations, including Scott’s Place barrier-free playground, the Wellington Amphitheater, Village Park, Tiger Shark Cove Park and the Wellington Environmental Preserve at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Habitat, according to village staff.

The American Beverage Association provided the bins to Wellington free of charge as part of a pilot public space recycling program.

The Solid Waste Authority and Waste Management of Florida will have tents at the amphitheater so residents and visitors can learn more about recycling. America Recycles Day is a program created by the nonprofit organization Keep America Beautiful and is designed to promote and celebrate recycling efforts in the United States.

Guests who attend the food truck event should bring their own chairs or blankets as seating is limited. Parking is available at Village Hall and the Community Center lots.
