By Beth Milligan | The Ticker

After months of intense public debate and City Commission deliberation, Traverse City commissioners last night passed a new city ordinance reducing fees and easing restrictions for food trucks downtown.

The new policy, which goes into effect May 16, establishes approved vending hours (7 a.m.-11 p.m. in commercial areas, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. in residential areas) as well as expanded zones where trucks may operate, including some city parking lots. Permit fees – previously $100 a day downtown – were reduced to $725 annually for private property vending and $1,225 annually for city property vending.

The ordinance’s passage paves the way for Gary and Allison Jonas, who are preparing for an anticipated May 18 opening of their new full-service bar The Little Fleet, housed in the former Jack’s Market building on East Front Street. The business, which will operate seven days a week from 11 a.m.-midnight, will host five permanent food trucks in its lot, with possible room for one or two more.

Below, The Ticker delivers a sneak preview of the food truck lineup heading to downtown TC when The Little Fleet opens its doors – and parking lot – later this month.

Anchor Station
Siren Hall and Lulu’s Bistro owner Michael Peterson is ready to “have a little fun” with his food as he parlays a handful of festival food truck appearances into a full-time presence at The Little Fleet. Anchor Station will pair some festival favorites – such as Killer Nachos – with dishes including blackened fish, burgers, falafel and Dirty Fries (French fries tossed with smoked pork belly, Asiago cheese, scallions and herbs.)

“It’s a great way for us to expand,” Peterson says of his new venture. “We’ll get to try out some things we might not normally do in the restaurants.”

The Dragon Wagon
Dan Marsh, owner of Red Ginger, purchased a 30′ catering truck previously used on the set of the reality show Extreme Makeover solely with the goal of expanding his catering business. “We were looking for a good mobile kitchen,” he explains. “This truck has almost all the equipment we use in the restaurant.”

But the opportunity to use the truck year-round – and to expand Red Ginger’s brand into a new market – sold Marsh on the idea of setting up shop at The Little Fleet. While The Dragon Wagon will be a separate entity from the restaurant, with a separate menu, customers can expect to see Marsh’s signature Asian influences at work in dishes like duck confit quesadillas, sushi, bao buns and gourmet “sliders” featuring crab cakes and seared tuna.

EZ Cheesy
Kim Ryan, who cut her teeth locally in the kitchens of The Cooks’ House and Om Cafe, will oversee operations at EZ Cheesy, a new food truck owned by the Jonases. The business will specialize in upscale grilled cheese sandwiches, featuring locally sourced cheese and bread, as well as unique sides and rotating specials. The Jonases will also introduce a bicycle unit during the summer months to sell a variety of popsicles and ice cream.

Pigs Eatin’ Ribs
Charlevoix-based chef Adam Kline is coming full circle with his new truck at The Little Fleet. The entrepreneur began serving his smokehouse-style BBQ in 2012 out of a traveling bus outfitted with a custom-built mobile cooker. The success of the operation paved the way for Kline to open a restaurant, Pigs Eatin’ Ribs Smokehouse, in Charlevoix.

Now Kline’s attention is back on mobile vending as he sets up a second (permanent) Pigs Eatin’ Ribs truck at the TC bar. “We’ll have a revolving menu, but we’ll always have our award-winning St. Louis spare ribs, pulled pork, brisket and probably a chicken item of some kind,” Kline says, who notes he may offer vegetarian options as well.

Roaming Harvest/Little Yella
With a food truck-friendly city ordinance finally in place, Simon Joseph – owner of Traverse City’s first food truck, Roaming Harvest, and leader of the advocacy group TC Street Food – is now ready to turn his attention to his next big project: expanding his business.

Joseph has purchased a second vehicle, nicknamed Little Yella, that will make its home at The Little Fleet. While the unit will retain Roaming Harvest branding, its menu will depart slightly from its predecessor’s. “We’re focusing on lighter fare,” explains Joseph.

“Things like simple sandwiches and salads…as well as our curries, which have been big with customers.”

The Guinness world record for the most fuel-efficient 40 ton truck was set by the Mercedes Benz Actros, which uses 19,44 litres per 100 km (6.88 gal per 100 miles) under test drive conditions. It was tested at the High Speed Track of Nardò, Brindisi, Italy.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Longest career as an ice-cream man, set by Charlie D’Angelo of Clifton, New Jersey, USA, who has been working as an ice-cream man non-stop for 30 years since 1979 in his Iggy’s Igloo ice-cream truck.

According to Susy Ampuero, director of marketing for Magic City Casino, “We had to have a minimum of 50 food trucks. We had a record number of 62.”

Burger Beast Sef Gonzalez, who coordinated the event with Magic City Casino, said the parade was quite a sight. “We had a helicopter hovering over to film the event. People were running outside of buildings to stop and watch. It was amazing.”

After months of planning, the event went off without a hitch, even raising $1,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which assists children with cancer, The Miami New Times reported.

“Even though we got rained out in the first hour, we still had about 8,000 people there enjoying the evening and the food trucks.”

Ever wanted to be part of a Guinness World Record? How about making history while stuffing your face? The time has come my friends, prepare for battle. Tomorrow, April 20, at Magic City Casino, Burger Beast plans to break the record for “World’s Largest Food Truck Event.”

Free admission? Yes. Free parking? Yes. Free stretch pants? Maybe…

We sat down with the Beast and asked him all the burning questions that were on your mind.

New Times: What inspired you to create this event?
Burger Beast: Almost two years ago I had an idea to do the World’s Largest Food Truck Event. I had found a spot in Homestead that I thought was ideal, but my partners at the time thought it wouldn’t work. I held onto to that idea till I suggested it to Magic City Casino late last year. They loved it, and we started working on it immediately and so here we are.

How many trucks do you need to break the record?
The Guinness Book World Record at the moment is 51 trucks. We have 65 food trucks scheduled to attend. If we don’t break that record, I’ll start a vegan diet on Sunday.

Was the date purely coincidental, or a stroke of genius?
I’d love to take credit but the stars aligned on this one. It’s gonna be a great night. Come hungry. Visine optional.

The dunk tank is a great idea. Any chance you’ll make a guest appearance?
Thanks. I might make an appearance if we raise a bunch of cash for the St. Baldrick’s Charity but thanks to Fatgirl Hedonist, Chat Chow TV, Pincho Factory, Latin House Burger & Taco Bar, and Food Truck Invasion for participating.

What trucks are you most looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to trying out some new trucks like Taste of South Africa & Monte’s Country Cajun Cookin. And probably Best French Fries which has never done an event in Miami. And maybe sneaking in a vegan burger from Mushaboom.

Do you plan on making this a regular event?
Regular? Hell no! We set the record and we’re done. But if someone tries to beat our record then it’ll be on! This is Miami’s record.

With so many trucks to choose from, how is anyone supposed to decide?
Give us your tips. I’d suggest showing up with 65 of your closest friends and sharing. Done and done.

Traverse City Commissioners unanimously voted in support of new regulations for food trucks and other mobile food vendors at their meeting last night. Commissioners called it a compromise plan that would allow mobile vendors in parts of the downtown, near Munson Medical Center, some schools and parks.

But both commissioners and members of the public remain polarized over where food trucks should go and what hours they should be allowed to operate.

Nick McAllister, who owns the restaurant House of Doggs, says mobile food vendors would wreck his business.

“I put my business in that position, gambled on that spot, followed all the rules that it took to take that spot knowing someone could move in next to me. But I had no idea that this would happen. If I did, I probably wouldn’t have done what I did,” he says.

McAllister says Traverse City doesn’t have enough workers downtown for brick-and-mortar businesses to compete with mobile venders who have a lower cost of doing business.

But vendors say it’s they only way most young people can start a business. They were glad the new regulations would do away with daily fees many found cost prohibitive last year. Instead, vendors would pay an annual fee of up to $1,225 dollars. Some food truck owners called the fees reasonable, though higher than they are in many towns.

Brian Welburn, a vender with King Wubbs Pita Dubs, also asked the commission to let his truck sell downtown to the late night bar crowds.

“If you’re going to restrict the times from 10:00 in the morning until 12:00 at night, then maybe you should restrict the times that restaurants can open up,” he said during public comment.

In the end, commissioners informally agreed on times food trucks should be allowed to operate: 7:00 am until 11:00 pm in commercial districts, and 9:00 am to 9:00 pm in residential areas, and only in specified areas would they be allowed. Commissioners also consider this a one season test that they expect to re-evaluate in the fall. Commissioners will have to vote again before changes are final.

We wanted to do something whimsical, slightly southern, slightly risque. The whole deal with the truck was to have fun

By Johnny Diaz | South Florida

The whirs and hisses of drills and welding torches carry outside a warehouse tucked away in a Fort Lauderdale office park. Inside, rows of step vans and delivery trucks are being reborn as food trucks.

As mobile eateries have flourished in South Florida in recent years, food truck builders have also shifted into high gear.

These mobile food truck factories — including Concession Nation in Fort Lauderdale, AAA Concession Trucks and Trailers in Davie, and FoodCart USA in Miami — scour the state for new and late-model Chevy, Ford and GMC step vans as well as used flower, fire and delivery trucks (and in one case, a shuttle van from NASA). They add fryers, refrigerators and stainless steel surfaces and turn them into rolling restaurants.

“Everybody wants one,” said Alexander Alvarez, owner of Concession Nation, which completed 126 jobs in 2012, a 34 percent increase from 2011.

The weakened economy and high unemployment of the past few years have helped drive the local food truck boom. As people were laid off or considering job changes, some decided to become their own boss and invest in mobile units. Meanwhile, TV programs such as Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race” and the Cooking Channel’s “Eat Street” were showing contestants making thousands of dollars a day with a customized food truck.

Yes, food truck operators have costs such as gas, food inventory and permits. But these are “less expensive than brick-and-mortar facilities, making it easier to enter the food service business,” said Ron Grimes, manager of environmental health programs at NSF International, a nonprofit that develops standards for equipment used in food service establishments such as food trucks.

“People don’t have to pay rent [with a food truck], and they are not committed to one place,” said Bruce Hicks, owner of AAA Concession Trucks and Trailers, adding that his business doubled to 30 trucks in 2012 from the previous year, from a mix of local and national clients.

He began to shift his business toward food truck building in the past two years after noticing a decline in RV-related jobs.

“I saw that [business] going away. People were in foreclosures and losing their homes,” Hicks said.

These days, he’s getting requests to create food trucks for freestanding businesses such as Popeye’s fast-food chicken and Donna’s Restaurant and Lounge, which has locations throughout Broward County.

He was also hired to outfit an all-white, 8-foot GMC step van for Gozen Yogurt, a self-service frozen yogurt company based in Philadelphia. It will be painted in orange, yellow and blue swirls and have a flat-screen TV, freezer and four self-serve yogurt machines. Once completed later this month, the truck will be ready to dispense sorbet, dulce de leche and caramel-flavored treats at corporate parties and festivals from Jupiter to Miami.

“The real advantage to having a food truck is that you will be able bring the entire frozen yogurt store experience to someone’s home,” said Adam Zell, the Florida partner for Gozen Yogurt.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the ever-growing popularity of food truck fare and events. The National Restaurant Association doesn’t track the number of food trucks in the United States, but the group has found that consumers have been increasingly flocking to mobile eateries.

In a 2012 association survey, 43 percent of adults said they had bought items from a food truck.

The demand for food trucks, Concession Nation’s Alvarez said, comes from a base of customers hungry for “fast-food but better quality. You get a homemade plate served to you in 10 minutes.”

At Concession Nation’s offices and warehouse in Fort Lauderdale, calls pour in from throughout the country. The San Francisco 49ers football team, for example, had the company create a team-themed concession trailer.

And the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach recently hired Concession Nation to build an 18-foot food truck to sell some of the dishes found at the resorts’ restaurants such as Gotham Steak and Scarpetta. The truck will roam the property, complete with three flatscreen monitors showing video of the hotel’s amenities.

“It’s a truck that we are going to use to feature lots of different venues in the resort,” said Thomas Connell, the resort’s executive chef. “We are going to use it for special events, barbecues, LIV [nightclub] after-hours … wherever our customers need it really.”

Costs range per builder, but a used food truck can cost $3,000 to $20,000, depending on the mileage, year, condition and size, which can be 16 or 18 feet long. Fully-loaded new trucks can run as much as $100,000. Generally, vendors find the trucks for the client, but a customer can bring a truck to a contractor and have it outfitted with equipment.

Workers strip the rear (or the box) of the truck, install aluminum walls and diamond-plated flooring. They add stainless-steel counters, refrigerators, sinks and deep fryers, or whatever the client requests. Some owners add LED lights on their roofs and flat screens to promote their menus to potential passers-by.

Concession Nation, which features its work on fastfoodtruck.com, also wraps the exterior of the vehicle to brand the food and services.

“You have a brand-new truck inside and, plus, you have free advertising whenever you hit the road,” said Monica Gonzalez, chief financial officer at Concession Nation. A typical job there lasts about five days.

Craig Larson, owner of Lucille’s Bad to the Bone BBQ in Boca Raton and Boynton Beach, wanted a food truck as a side catering business to bring his culinary fare to office workers daily.

“We realized there was as significant truck scene going on down in [Miami-Dade] but didn’t see a lot of it in Palm Beach,” he said.

So last year he sought the services of Concession Nation, which transformed a 2001 GMC 28-foot-long step van used for flower deliveries in Disney World into Lucille’s on Wheels, a black food truck bedecked with the image of a smiling red-headed woman carrying a tray of food.

“We wanted to do something whimsical, slightly southern, slightly risque. The whole deal with the truck was to have fun,” said Larson, whose mobile unit houses a three-compartment sink, two fryers and a 4-foot grill that makes barbecue chicken nachos and fries slicked in gravy. “It’s a whole rebirth for that truck from what it did originally.”

GAZETTE PHOTO/RHONDA FERRARI CALVERT

All Angels Episcopal Church and Academy hosted another Movie Night on Friday, Jan. 25 at its new home on the school grounds, 1801 Ludlum Dr.

As usual, everyone was welcome to come and enjoy a wonderful evening of fun and free movies. But this month’s event had a different twist as it was accompanied by a Food Truck Rally.

For $2 per person, you received an early entrance wristband that allowed you into the food courtyard. Wristband proceeds benefited the building fund. This Food Truck Rally featured Sweet Mini Donuts, Mobile Cuisine, Taipa, Pescados Unidos, La Nostra Pizza and Q’Sabroso.

“We are so excited to see so many people come out for the Food Trucks and Movie Night tonight,” said Rev. Susan Keedy of All Angels. “Especially since now that we have moved Movie Night back to the church property. It’s really exciting to see so many people coming out. This is really still a community event and we would really hope the community would participate.”

The turnout was excellent. Children of all ages settled in for an evening of fun watching the animated feature “Ice Age 4: Continental Drift.”

Manny, Diego and Sid embark upon their greatest adventure after cataclysm sets an entire continent adrift. Separated from the rest of the herd, they use an iceberg as a makeshift ship, which launches them on an epic seafaring quest.

That was followed by “The Odd Life of Timothy Green.” A happily married couple, Cindy and Jim Green, can’t wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. When young Timothy shows up on their doorstep one stormy night, Cindy and Jim and their small town of Stanleyville learn that sometimes the unexpected can bring some of life’s greatest gifts.

Admission for the movies was free to the public.

The films were projected onto a giant double-sided screen, creating a movie theatre under the stars. The attendees enjoyed the movies while lounging on their lawn chairs and blankets. Popcorn, sodas and other snacks were made available by All Angels.

PoShan Wong Rabade, who was in attendance with her family, said, “This was a great idea that All Angels and Mother Keedy had to bring the food trucks out to the school and for the community. I’m so excited that hopefully with this great turnout we will continue to do this along with Movie Night.”

“The proceeds from the wristbands are going toward the building fund,” said All Angels kindergarten teacher Debra Peacock. “And once you got inside, there was a wonderful array of food trucks. I had the chicken kabob, which was fabulous, and the flan was to die for. We appreciate everybody’s support.”

Angels Episcopal Church and Academy are hopeful they can make Movie Night another tradition the community looks forward to.

For more information on All Angels’ upcoming events, call 305-888-9483.

What They Said

    • Councilwoman Grace Bain: “I ate at one truck a Cuban steak sandwich. And I had awesome corn fritters. Oh my god! It was really very good.”

    • Alex Varela: “We come to all the events at All Angels. It’s a great community to be a part of. The movies used to be on the Circle. I wish they would take them back to the Circle. The food trucks are a great idea. I haven’t had dinner yet, but I’ll be there soon.”

    • Kenia Fernandez: “I think Movie Night has always been fabulous. It’s very cozy now. I think it’s ashamed that it’s not on the Circle so that local businesses could profit more from the whole thing.”

    • Nancy Torga: “We’re just trying to bring the community and the school together to make it a big community event.”

http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/02/04/3208513/all-angels-church-serves-up-food.html

Hyde Beach, located in the rear of the ritzy SLS Hotel behind The Bazaar and Katsuya on South Beach, isn’t your regular food spot. In fact, it’s not really a food spot, at least not to those who come to jam out to the tunes of local talent like Pirate Stereo and Jose de las Casas on Sundays.

Hyde Beach, along with Hyde at the American Airlines Arena, is Los Angeles-based SBE’s first attempt at developing the Hyde brand on the East Coast. Hyde Beach is the brand’s first oceanfront and poolside endeavor.

It is a day club that stays open till about 9 p.m. during the week, and during weekends, hours extend until 2 a.m. Food, however, is only served till sundown out of “mobile kitchen art installation” from painter Picasso. Not Pablo, but Claudio Picasso, a Miami local who’s brought a little bit of Wynwood to South Beach. The Hyde Beach menu offers food by Jose Andres, who is the culinary director for the entire SLS Hotel South Beach property and owner of The Bazaar. All in-room dining, breakfast and lunch served in the hotel is food by Jose Andres.

At Hyde Beach, you can have a taste of the chef’s work without having to get a room or all spruced up for a nice dinner at Katsuya or The Bazaar. At Hyde Beach you can lay out by the pool, get a tan, and take in the Miami heat while sucking on Jose Andres’ flavored paletas or cocktail push-pops. During the hot summer months, the hotel will have a cooler cart to serve up the frozen treats.

If you are hungry for more, Hyde Beach offers a menu that’s concise and measures up to its setting. You can wine and dine on a beach chair in the sun, under the shade of some trees, or in a half-indoor bar area that’s similar to a surf shop. Line with couches and a foosball table that’s used for both playing and for eating.

Hotel guests can enjoy beach chairs and daybeds free of charge, but for anyone else who wants to partake in the Hyde Beach experience, there is a $100 minimum per person, which is $200 on weekends. Although if you’re coming to Hyde for the day club experience with cocktails at $16 and the temperature at the Miami average, you may end up spending that much anyway.

Prices for food range from $5 for paletas (flavored ice cream) to $20 for a chicken ceaser salad. Whereas food service stops at sundown, cocktails keep it going till closing.
