Hunger Free Colorado launched a new type of food truck — a 40-foot-long neon green RV converted to a mobile office —that helps connect needy families to food sources in the city. (Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post)

Most of Denver’s food trucks serve cupcakes, tacos or sandwiches, and most of them are actually trucks.

Hunger Free Colorado took a different road.

The Denver nonprofit launched its own “food truck” — a 40-foot-long neon green RV converted to a mobile office — last week in an effort to connect struggling Coloradans with information and services.

“We’re using this to get out into the community to reach people who don’t know there are services to help them,” said Hunger Free Colorado spokeswoman Michelle Ray .

The truck was on hand at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City on Friday in conjunction with Food Bank of the Rockies.

The food bank’s mobile food pantry makes biweekly stops in the lot, serving 200 to 300 people each time.

“They only get a small box,” mobile outreach coordinator Douglas Vega said. “The food banks meet the immediate need, but that food will run out.”

Vega plans to bring the truck into the community at least four times a week to encourage those who qualify to sign up for the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps.

The process can take months, Vega said, but the new mobile office cuts that time down to a single day.

“Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, we’re just trying to fill the gap,” Vega said.

In 2011, about 165,000 Coloradans received food-stamp benefits, up from about 95,000 in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. But only 51 percent of eligible Coloradans participate in the program, said food-resource navigator Sharon Duran.

The food truck’s staff said most people they help are employed full time, but that rent and other expenses leave little room for food expenses.

While the truck’s route is currently limited to Denver, Vega plans to help struggling individuals across Colorado. “If there’s a need, we want to be there,” he said.

The truck’s full schedulecan be found at Hunger Free Colorado’s website.

By Samantha Alviani | Denver Westword

Denver is experiencing a food renaissance — and for the past few years, food trucks have been at the vanguard of this movement, taking some of this city’s most inventive dishes out for a spin and putting the adventure back into eating.

If you plan on finding your next meal on wheels, check out one of these ten trucks, each one offering a movable feast.

Hey PB + J
This truck is onto something. Long lauded as the go-to meal for toddlers and college students alike, peanut butter and jelly always hits the spot. What sets this truck (and its sandwiches) apart is its very adult (yet playful) approach, which includes experimenting with such mobile-made condiments as rosemary honey and homemade fig jam. The truck has unexpected choices for both the sweet and savory palate, including Blueberry Pie PB & J, an unsettlingly delicious combination of almond butter, homemade blueberry jam, baked pie crust (pie crust!), and clover honey, and the Thai PB & J, a savory number made with spicy peanut butter, orange marmalade, coconut, fresh basil and crushed peanuts.

Pink Tank

The Pink Tank won Best Food Truck honors in the Best of Denver 2013, and with good reason. This truck is not for the shy or faint of heart: In fact, if you’re patronizing this place, you’d better be ready to air all of your dirty food fantasies and hidden food fetishes in front of a long line of others waiting for their meals. Exhibit A: the “F Bomb,” an all-beef hot dog with scrambled eggs, crispy thick-cut bacon, broiled cheddar cheese and caramel-maple syrup, served on homemade French toast — and that’s just breakfast. If you come back for lunch, dinner or a late-night snack, you can get down with the “When in Rome,” a cheesesteak-style chopped burger with grilled ham, thick-cut bacon, grilled onions and peppers, nacho-style cheddar cheese and wing sauce, served on a fluffy hoagie roll. Now, that’s just naughty.

Manna from Heaven

Manna from Heaven took home the Best Gourmet Food Truck award in 2012, and it continues to reward its loyal (and growing) cadre of followers with heavenly, Vietnamese-inspired cuisine on the healthier end of the food-truck spectrum. Although Manna doesn’t claim to be traditional or even authentic Vietnamese, the flavors and ingredients hit the sweet spot if you’re looking for Southeast Asian cuisine. Try the cult-favorite banh mi, a freshly baked roll with seasoned pork, steak or veggies, loaded with crunchy cucumbers and pickled daikon carrots and a fresh-cut herb mix; or the pho, with its rich, aromatic broth.

Comida

The loncherias were the first food trucks in town, and the pink Comida truck follows in their tracks, serving a menu of tacos, tostadas, quesadillas and gorditas all prepared on-site. Tacos come traditional or griddled. The pork carnitas version is served over sweet potato mash with a tangy-hot pineapple habanero salsa, and the “Bacon Jalapeno” griddled taco is topped with a blend of cheeses, salsa verde and crema.

Mikes 2 Kitchen

We like Mike. Mikes 2 Kitchen serves up simple, flavorful soul food — whether it’s a loaded Po’ Boy or a plate of tacos — with downhome friendliness. Try the shoestring fries smothered in homemade gumbo, the perfectly seasoned shrimp Po Boy or a plate of carnitas lunch tacos. You can also start your morning with Mike’s; it serves breakfast tacos as well as sandwiches daily.

Sweet Dixie’s Southern Cuisine
You’ve probably seen Sweet Dixie’s camped outside REI or Great Divide — but if you haven’t tried it, know that this Southern grub will hit your sweet spot. The owner, a native of Lexington, North Carolina, brings the barbecue and low-country soul food of her hometown to Denver in the form of luscious pulled pork; flaky, buttery biscuits, and classic, home-style sweet potato fries and macaroni and cheese. And for vegetarians, it often has country-fried tofu on the menu.

Waffleganger

Waffleganger quickly became a beloved Denver tradition for its delicious array of sweet and savory waffle sandwiches, which fills the chicken-and-waffle need in so many of us. This truck has one of the town’s most all-encompassing menus, with a rotating, seasonal menu for vegetarians, meat lovers and vegans alike. The “Dirty Bird,” a savory waffle with fried chicken and chili maple syrup, is undeniably perfect; and the “Greektown,” a savory waffle with locally made seitan, Sicilian lemony-zucchini tzatziki, house-cured Kalamata tofeta, and ripe tomatoes and greens, is just as satisfying for carnivores. On the sweet side, there’s the “Nana,” a sweet waffle with banana, housemade granola, and coconut cream. And if vegan eaters feel they haven’t gotten enough love on the food-truck front, on Saturday mornings, the Waffleganger truck goes completely vegan at Nooch market.

Uber Sausage

Über Sausage opened up shop with the goal of feeding Denver interesting, artisan sausage. Two brick-and-mortars and a truck later, Uber is a a roll, serving uniquely crafted, inventive sausage sandwiches. Instead of the more traditional sausage with grilled peppers and onions, you’ll find choices like the “Vietnam,” a Thai chili lemongrass pork sausage smothered in Asian slaw, a host of fresh herbs like mint and Thai basil, black sesame seeds and a Sriracha aioli. The “Hatch,” a pork green chile sausage, is made with cilantro, mixed cabbage, Jatch green chiles and crema fresca. Conveniently, and perhaps strategically, the Über truck can usually be found outside your favorite beer haunt — and even more conveniently, its sausage will pair well with your beer.

Fat Sully’s Slice Truck

Fat Sully’s Slice Truck is a mecca for those who pine for pizza, cooking up hot, New York-style, face-sized slices for the masses whether it’s lunchtime or midnight. This is the kind of pizza that doesn’t adapt well if moved from its plate; instead, diners usually have to take a bite, nudge the slice off the plate a little more, wipe their happy faces, and repeat. Order your choice of toppings, including sautéed onions and feta, on a base of cheese pizza, and then enjoy the thin, crispy, chewy-on-the inside crust — simple goodness as its bes

Steuben’s Food Service

Pearl, the Steuben’s outpost on wheels, paved the way for the Denver food-truck revolution by offering a mobile version of some of the dishes that gained fans at the Uptown restaurant, the best versions of classic American comfort food you could ask for. From juicy green chile cheeseburgers and a loaded BLT to such tasty sides as deviled eggs and “Steubie snacks,” these are all can’t-fail. Possibly the best dish of all? the Philly Cheesesteak, a meaty, delicious mess of chopped steak, sautéed onions and cheese in a freshly-made hoagie roll.

Local hipsters and foodies, rejoice.

Sundays on the Streets, Centennial’s yearly outdoor art market known for its eclectic taste in all things artsy, now hopes to be known for all things tasty, too.

Along with its new location at Cherry Knolls Shopping Center, directly across the street from The Streets at SouthGlenn, event promoter Robin Loughran says this year’s market will include an army of food trucks.

Yes, food trucks.

No longer the last bastion for sandwiches at construction sites, Loughran said food trucks have morphed into trendy mobile catering options offering a smorgasbord of different cuisines.

“It’s a perfect combination for us this year,” she said. “They’ve long been a hit downtown and we hope to have the largest collection of gourmet food trucks in the city at Sundays on the Streets and we’ve already got five trucks confirmed.”

A summertime staple at The Streets at SouthGlenn, Loughran also said the market’s decision move to Cherry Knolls was based on the need for more space and options for vendors.

“We’ve got a little more room to spread out, and while vendor tents are encouraged, they are not required,” she said. “We will also have more flexibility when it comes to parking and setup.”

Sundays on the Streets features the wares of local artisans, photographers and other crafty folk.

“There’s jewelry, handbags, designer accessories, baked goods and this year, we’ve added antiques,” said Loughran.

The market is held monthly on the second Sunday, beginning on Mother’s Day, May 12.

Market hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Loughran said interested vendors, artisans, musicians and food trucks should contact her directly for an application. While space is still available, she expects to be sold out soon.

“Centennial is my home, too,” she said. “And Sundays on the Streets is just one way to celebrate the people of this wonderful community and in which we live.”

BREAKOUT BOX

If you go

Her daughter, Kat, left, and her husband, Larry, run the food truck, which is part of the Food Truck Row organization. Photo by Anya Semenoff, YourHub

Two years ago, food trucks in Denver were fending for themselves, but thanks to the work of Larry Galves and others, a group of trucks is working together and supporting each other.

Galves, who runs the truck Manna From Heaven, is the founder of Food Truck Row, an organization of 17 trucks that help each other through signage, business cards and a legal defense fund.

The group also recommends all the trucks in Food Truck Row and sends potential customers to other trucks in the organization.

“There’s strength in numbers. That’s what we’re trying to do,” Galves said.

Some of the places where Food Truck Row trucks are commonly found include the Auraria Campus, Civic Center Park and the University of Denver.

Galves said the group formed in 2011 with four trucks after talking to a few other owners outside a nightclub in Denver. The group formed an LLC in January and has steadily grown in the past 18 months.

“It really helps the industry. … We find support rather than make it a competitive industry,” said David Mueller, owner of the Pink Tank food truck. Mueller was one of the founding members of Food Truck Row.

Galves said many food trucks that have joined the group have seen the benefits and they don’t have a competitive attitude toward each other. In fact, he said the more food trucks are around, the more likely people are to visit them. There are other benefits.

“It’s a safety thing. We all park together, we help each other out,” Galves said.

Mueller sees other benefits as well.

“We basically reap the benefits of everyone’s hard work. It’s kind of nice to have that shared community of good locations and friendly people,” he said.

Bob Mickus recently joined Food Truck Row earlier this year with his Bistro Bus, an offshoot of his Delizios restaurant in Littleton. He said he has received a lot of help on getting the truck started from people who have been through the trials before. He said he’s a lot further along than he would have been without the help.

“It’s a great organization, definitely unique to the Denver area,” he said.

Galves said that even though not all food trucks are members of Food Truck Row, he still enjoys working with others and all are welcome to join.

“It’s not like we’re only going to work with Food Truck Row. We love working with all food trucks. It’s a brotherhood because we’ve all had the same struggles,” Galves said.

For a complete list of food trucks included in Food Truck Row and a schedule, visit Foodtruckrow.com.

“The biggest benefit of Food Truck Row is we all get to hang out with like-minded people and share business with people who share the same goals,” Mueller said.

DENVER – The Bistro Colorado food truck will never be able to sneak up on anyone. The flavorful aroma of gourmet food being cooked inside the truck signals its presence in a neighborhood.

Travis Smith, a longtime chef, started the food truck about a year ago. While he wants his customers to enjoy the food on the menu, he also wants to raise their appetite for helping others. A small sign on the food truck speaks to efforts Smith and Bistro Colorado are making to serve the needs of others.

The sign reads, “Bistro Colorado proudly supports Domus Pacis Family Respite.” Smith has donated proceeds from his food truck to the organization and volunteered his services as a chef.

Domus Pacis, which is Latin for “house of peace,” is a Colorado non-profit created to serve families dealing with cancer. Vince and Marylouise White-Petteruti founfed the organization in 2008. Through the organization families battling cancer can escape to the high country for a week to celebrate life.

“You look around and see that 65 percent of the homes in Summit County along sat vacant for probably 48 to 50 weeks a year and we thought this would make total sense,” Marylouise said.

They now have 90 homeowners in Summit County who have made their vacation homes available to families dealing with life threatening illness.

“We have about a third of the families that are experiencing an end of life situation. So this is where they all gather. They celebrate with each other. They build wonderful memories that will sustain them, not only through the difficult time that has come, but from the moments that when the loss is felt,” Marylouise said.

The organization has steadily grown over the years. In 2008, they hosted five families for week long respites. In 2012, that number had risen to 70 and they are hoping to be able to accommodate between 80 and 100 families this year.

To do so they are reliant on weeklong donations of vacation homes in Summit County. They also rely on the generosity of restaurants in Summit County that provide complementary dinners to families. Cash donations fill in the other needs of the families.

With positive steps taken by the city council, Denver is turning out to be one of the friendliest cities for street food. MyCityWay lists a few carts & trucks you can stop by for lunch this Wednesday:

Biker Jim’s

Jim Pittenger aka Biker Jim repossessed cars for a living before he turned chef. Now he grills anything from a regular hot dog, to reindeer and wild boar, rattlesnakes, elks, pheasant or maybe even a yak if you please. The sandwiches are then loaded with Coca-Cola soaked onions and cream cheese. If you are still hungry, order one of Jim’s homemade cheesecakes on the side. Do check the weather before you go over to the cart, if it is too cold, he is probably not there. 2148 Larimer St

Pinche Tacos

Voted as the ‘Best Street Taco’ (Readers’ Choice – Westword), the corn tortillas are freshly made every morning. The tacos are made-to-order. Try the ‘comida de la calle’, authentic Mexican street food with a modern twist, or- head over to their restaurant, it is equally popular. Pinche Tacos was nominated as one of the top 50 new restaurants in 2012 by Bon Appetit. 1514 York Street

Shondiz

Grab some Donner kebab, or a falafel at this Mediterranean food cart located opposite the Hard Rock Café. If you want something lighter, you can try the sandwiches or a simple salad. Shondiz starts at 7 am through 3.30 pm on weekdays. Glenarm Pl & 16th St Mal

The Denver Cupcake Truck

If you are looking for something sweet, try the cupcakes at the Denver Cupcake Truck. Though their flagship store is located at 2216 Kearney Street, the mobile truck can be seen all over the city. Try their Elvis Cupcakes, or the Red Velvets. If you are a chocolate addict, go for their heavenly Chocolate Chip Cookie – voted as Denver’s best (5280 Magazine, November 2008).

Chile Billy

If you are craving spicy food, stop by Chile Billy’s food cart in Downtown Denver or at the Denver Beer Co. Pick from a variety of Chile infused options on the menu. The flavors are inspired by the American Southwest and Mexican cuisine. Except for their hatch green chilies (from New Mexico) all their products are locally sourced. 1695 Platte Street

At the National Western Stock Show, not all the pigs are on the hoof…or even on a stick, which is how one of the vendors there serves pork. Venturing north out of the Hall of Education, beyond that vendor and down the manure-strewn path toward the Livestock Center and the train tracks that shipped cattle to Denver a century ago, past all the fliers for equipment auctions and bull semen, we suddenly found ourselves in hog heaven. Because there, tucked into an inconspicuous corner, was the Common Link food truck, covered with gnomes — not a frequent sight at the Stock Show — and a sign that promised pork from Tender Belly.

That’s the company started by brothers Erik and Shannon Duffy, who were born and raised in Iowa and have headquartered their two-year-old company in the heart of hip Denver, in a building they share with the Infinite Monkey Theorem Winery on Larimer Street, just a mile away from the National Western Complex — but in many ways, a world apart. Even though the Stock Show is a celebration of farming and ranching traditions at their best, many of the booths here peddle culinary snacks at their worst, including friedOreos, fried funnel cakes, even fried green beans. But then the husband-and-wife team of Jessica Doerffel and Derrick Smith got behind the wheel of Common Link — “enjoy every sausage…one savory link at a time” is its motto — and started steering the show in a new direction.

We last saw Doerffel at the Colorado Restaurant Association’s annual IndustrySpotlight Awards ceremony this past April, where she was honored as Exceptional Newcomer for her extraordinary contributions to the hospitality industry; she shared that award with Mark DeNittis, founder of Il Mondo Vecchio. But after health-code hassles, DeNittis closed his salumeria this past November (he’s now at the Cook Street School of Culinary Arts), and Doerffel, too, has left the Ritz-Carlton, where she’d earned the CRA’s seal of approval. She and Smith, who’d been director of housekeeping at the Brown Palace, decided it was time to venture out on their own and found a truck in Los Angeles, which they got up and running a month ago — just in time to be part of the Stock Show. “It’s utterly exciting,” says Doerffel. “I absolutely loved the Ritz-Carlton; I’d been with them from college. But this was a personal choice for us — to be able to see each other, have a family and be our own bosses.” Be their own bosses and follow a route that so many entrepreneurs have taken over the last few years, when food trucks started revving up along the Front Range.

Common Link is normally based in Fort Collins, where it cruises the breweries and tap rooms and plans to regularly park at Colorado State University, Doerffel’s alma mater, come August. But since January 12, she says, “We’ve been living and breathing the Stock Show.” And cowgirls and cattlemen have been inhaling Common Link’s uncommon offerings, including hot dogs that are 100 percent Tender Belly pork; mac-and-cheese dogs made at Continental Sausage that you can order wrapped in bacon (from Tender Belly, of course); and bacon doughnuts.

When they’re parked in Fort Collins, Doerffel explains, they can get a little more ambitious, offering traditional Belgian fries that are hand-cut on site and creating poutines with “awesome cheese curds” they source locally, then smother with beef gravy made from scratch. “We’re sourcing out a lot of local products,” she says, naming a litany of Colorado purveyors that supply restaurants across town, keeping menus fresh…and local. “We have the opportunity to try to find the best of the best.”

And then Common Link delivers it to an uncommon group of fans that now stretches from CSU to Denver’s annual cow parade, leading the way for a next generation of vendors who can mix the best of the old with the best of the new…and pointing toward future possibilities for the Stock Show. This could well be how the West is won.

Food trucks are supposed to be fun. Eating food on the street … now, that’s fun. So it makes sense that Joshua Wills approached the project of branding for Denver’s Deluxe Street Food with the goal of creating a fun brand that can be transferred to a mobile restaurant. The name of the food truck isn’t overly clever, but it’s the work that Wills does with the truck’s appearance and the use of typography to really sell the Deluxe brand. Willis created the nickname “little orange rocket” for the bright orange truck and that’s simply asking for people to step right up and enjoy whatever they’re offering. Wills also capitalizes on a current trend of using words within a design to directly and literally spell out what the brand stands for or what the customer should feel. It turns the Deluxe truck into not just a moving advertisement, but also gives clear and influential reasons to a customer to walk up to the truck and eat.

The Duffeyroll is a treat that’s become a tradition in Colorado. Established in 1986, an entire generation has grown up enjoying our delicious cinnamon rolls, great eats, and friendly, relaxed vibe.

By Jeanna | The50Dates.com

This week’s Food Truck Bucket List Friday takes us to Denver, Colorado and a food truck that started in 1986 – before street food was a trend. Nick Ault and Jim Duffey started serving their Duffeyrolls cinnamon rolls out of a push cart on the streets of Denver.

Now a local staple for Denver residents and what one of the cofounders calls “the Grey Poupon of cinnamon rolls,” they own three brick-and-mortar locations, but still pay homage to their pushcart roots and serve Duffeyrolls out of the back of a cool, converted VW Van.

via Culinary Colorado

Apparently a Duffeyroll is similar to a traditional a cinnamon roll we all know and love, but not doughy or topped with a thick layer of frosting. “The Duffeyroll, cofounder Ault says, is flaky like a French pastry and finished with a light glaze in the customer’s choice of six flavors: Original, Zesty Orange, Irish Cream, Mountain Maple, English Toffee, or Pecanilla Crunch.” #

If I visited Dufferoll’s VW food truck, I’d start out with their Bakin’ Sun breakfast sandwich with bacon, cheddar cheese, scrambled eggs and chipotle mayo (served with a mini Duffeyroll).

via @kelleyle_ on Instagram

Then I’d try at minimum their Zesty Orange, English Toffee and Pecanilla Crunch Duffeyrolls

via @ndhoag on Instagram

I’d dive right in when my Duffeyroll was served up warm and hot for me from the oven. Mmm flaky and gooey amazingness. Then I’d wash it down with their proprietary iced tea called Islesboro tea, made from a recipe Ault’s grandmother came up with in Islesboro, Maine. They brew their tea then pour it over fresh mint leaves and then fresh lemons are added. Yum!

via @aaronkwhite on Instagram

After I was Duffeyroll wasted, I’d hit the road to find some Colorado snowboard hotties to snuggle with post-coiDuffeyroll. xo

You can find Duffeyrolls on Twitter and Facebook too.

The Taste of the Philippines got a taste of politics yesterday when Secretary of State Scott Gessler stopped by the food truck on the 16th Street Mall during the lunch rush for some chicken adobo, manok sa gata and lumpia.

Though Gessler says he doesn’t think he’d ever had Filipino food before, a desire to try new foods was not the primary reason for his visit. Kathy Gietl, the food truck’s owner, was featured in one of Gessler’s voter registration advertisements, in which an actor stopped random people throughout the state and asked them if they were signed up to vote.

Since she was located at a stationary food truck, Gietl was pretty much the only participant in that ad that Gessler’s office was able to track down. So he decided to eat lunch there and deliver her a signed copy of a poster featuring her food truck. And try some Filipino food at the same time.

Gietl, 29, has operated the food truck on the mall for about six months. A former accountant, she decided to switch careers and, with the help of her mother, opened up A Taste of the Philippines, which she thinks is the first mobile Filipino food operation in Colorado.

Owner Kathy Gietl – photo Sam Levin

She shared a bit of her backstory with Gessler when he visited yesterday.

“It’s awesome — I’m all giddy,” said Gietl, as Gessler chowed down. “It’s great for business…and it’s my little fifteen minutes of fame.”

Gietl was happy to participate in the ad so long as she didn’t have to discuss her own political views or which candidate she would be voting for in November. “A lot of people think voting doesn’t matter, but it does,” she said, adding that she hopes more people registered to vote because of the commercial.

Now that she runs a business, she’s more tuned into politics and the presidential race,” she explained. “As a business owner, I’m taking more of a stand…. It’s more important to me.”

Gietl is from Quezon City in the Philippines, and has lived in the United States for twenty years. She spent most of her life in Illinois and moved to Denver about six years ago; she now lives downtown. Her truck is parked at 16th and Champa streets, and operates Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit The Latest Word for more on Gessler’s stop and the registration effort that Gietl participated in.
