SAN FRANCISCO, Ca. (Gannett) – A food truck in San Francisco called Bacon Bacon is being ordered to shut down, after neighbors in the area complained that the store gave off too much of a bacon smell, which led to the discovery of a permitting issue.

But folks on the the Bacon Bacon Facebook Page are putting up a fight against the shut down.

On Friday, a post was made on the page saying:

“Update from director of health department, Mr Lee to attorney for neighbor and myself ‘if you pull your formal complaint against bacon bacon, planning department will approve and I will allow bacon bacon to stay open while they make upgrades.’ Our fate now lies in the lawyers and said neighbors hands.”

Bacon Bacon’s Facebook page says it opened in July 2011 and specializes in “bacon on a burger, bacon dipped in chocolate, a pork belly sandwich and bacon jam for added bacon deliciousness.”

Six days post-Tacolandia is, maybe, more than enough rest to prep for the return of the largest gathering of street food purveyors in the Southland on Saturday, June 29. Returning to the Rose Bowl, this year’s fest has been pushed a month up, meant to avoid the sweltering heat of July as experienced in events past. (Although there’s no telling with the weather these days.)

Over 75 vendors — from food trucks to pop-ups to restaurants — are expected to show up. There will be appearances from the familiar, such as Grilled Cheese Truck, Wicked Kitchen, Bigmista’s BBQ, Starry Kitchen, Ceviche Project and Plant Food for People. There will also be quite a few new faces to the event as well, including Badmaash and D’elish at Tiara Cafe. The Ice Cream Social is making a return, with sweets from The Donut Snob, Peddler’s Creamery, Churros Calientes, The Cream’wich and Z Confections.

For those interested in beer and spirits, there will be a Singha Beer Garden — complete with kegs, four cocktail bar stations and wine tasting at the Cupcake Winery’s mobile lounge. Those in search of non-alcoholic refreshments can head to stands like Pressed Juicery, Honest Tea, Jarritos and ONE Coconut Water. Handsome Roasters and The Coffee Bean will provide caffeinated pick-me-ups.

Live bands will be performing while attendees partake in all the food and drink that comes with a ticket purchase. The band will be announced as the event draws closer.

There are a limited number of all-inclusive presale tickets available, capping at 5,000. General admission is $50 and VIP early admission costs $75. Tickets can be purchased at the event’s website and Eventbrite. Among the swag and perks included with a ticket, free parking and Uber ride discounts might be the best one of all.

More details will be released in the next few days — we’ll keep you posted.

A San Francisco restaurant was forced to close this week after complaints that the area surrounding the Bacon-centric food truck smelled too strongly of the popular breakfast food. Bacon Bacon was forced to close after neighbor’s complaints, citing the pork odor was created due to illegal grease dumping, uncovered the truck’s lack of proper permits.

NBC News reported Friday that neighbors near the popular Calif. food truck were unable to come to an agreement with the owner, Jim Angelus, over what they considered an “offensive smell” issue due to the restaurant’s heavy pork usage, resulting in the closing of Bacon Bacon Friday.

Neighbors insisted the “porcine aroma” was due to grease being illegally disposed of in nearby sewers, claiming they offered to buy Angelus a new air filter to help remedy the issue but were denied. Complaints led to the discovery that the truck lacked “proper health permits” leading to its recent closure.

Restaurant owner, Jim Angelus, dismissed the reports on the official Bacon Bacon’s Facebook page Thursday, calling the claims of illegal behavior “silly” saying the truck’s grease trap will get picked up and cleaned out on Tuesday. One neighbor of the truck commented on the reports asking the business to remain open despite criticism.

“Hold on! I’m one of Bacon Bacon’s neighbors and I believe I speak for 99 percent of the neighborhood when I say: ‘Stay HERE,’” said Lucia Tallchief Mele. “Don’t let a coupla nasty nay-sayers or clueless bureaucrats deprive you for your livelihood! We will fight for you [sic],” she said.

Angelus has since started a petition on the company’s website asking loyal customers to assist in keeping the truck in their current Frederick Street location saying, “Two neighbors near Bacon Bacon want to see our doors closed. We need your support.” Over 1,800 supports have already signed the petition which was first created in Feb.

According to the site, the food truck was previously involved in one prior incident. The post stating the truck was involved in a fire aboard the vehicle in Nov. 2012. No workers or customers were hurt in the blaze that reportedly wasn’t due to current grease issues.

The popular restaurant was featured on the Discovery series, “United States of Bacon,” which classified the establishment and a “portable pork paradise” and “a four wheel shrine to swine.” Angelus said he started the business after a lifelong passion for food, majorly bacon. One of the businesses best-selling products included their grilled cheese sandwich which includes “bacon jam,” a mix of pork, maple syrup and coffee.

“I told the guys if they forget an ingredient, just put bacon on there,” said Angelus on the program.

NBC reported that Angelus is currently working on reving the business in a location where an approved kitchen is available.

Off the Grid began in June 2010 with the simple idea that grouping Street Food vendors together would create an experience that would allow neighbors to connect with friends, and families to reconnect with each other. Since then Off the Grid has worked hard to develop markets that are both located in urban cores of cities, and that utilize spaces that are not easily activated effectively throughout the day.

Currently, Off the Grid operates 20 weekly markets in the greater Bay Area, and works with nearly 150+ vendors weekly. At its core, Off the Grid believes in the power of a shared food experience to connect communities.

IF YOU GO
Off the Grid: Serramonte (at Serramonte Center off Hwy 280)
Date: Tuesday, May 21, 2013 (every subsequent Tuesday)
Time: 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

One of the lunches we had last week in LA was from Slider City. They have 14(!) different types of sliders to choose from on the menu, each named after an American city.

You get 3 sliders of your choice and a side of fries for $10. There are 5 different types of fries to choose from too.

We got New York (natch), Miami and New Orleans sliders, plus lemon pepper fries. Unfortunately, they were out of the garlic pepper fries.

We used to be against the concept of sliders, because who wants all that bread. These days, we like the idea of trying 3 different dishes instead of just one. Plus, sliders rolls are usually fairly light as bread goes.

Lunch took quite a while to come out of the truck. It turned out they were having trouble with the fryer, and it was a good 15 minute wait.

(credit: NYSF)

After getting our lunch, we started with the Miami slider. The chicken was grilled a little too much on one side, but overall it was good. There was a spicy, fruity sauce on the patty, but no sign of the advertised jalapeño and onion. Oops! Guess they got a little preoccupied with the fryer.

The New York slider was next, which was a beef patty. It came with relish, horseradish and cheddar cheese. The horseradish wasn’t too noticeable, but we always put relish and some type of cheese on our burgers, like this was done. Nice job on the New York slider.

(credit: NYSF)

We ordered the New Orleans slider because it was basically a Buffalo chicken slider. No idea why they called it a New Orleans instead of a Buffalo.

The chicken patty was topped with a nice buffalo sauce and shredded cheese. Once again, no sign of the advertised mushrooms.

(credit: NYSF)

Despite the problems with the fryer, the fries were very good. Long, thin and a little crispy, with a healthy dose of lemon pepper. It doesn’t look like there is much seasoning on the fries, but they tasted very good. Probably the best fries we had all week.

Hopefully we just caught Slider City on a bad day. The food was good, but the fryer problems proved to be a major distraction, between the wait and the missing toppings.

You can find Slider City on twitter here, and their website is here.

You can’t go wrong with the combine food, music and movies; that’s why when I heard about the Street Food Cinema festival, I was thrilled to learn more about the event. Produced by TIL Lifestyle Marketing and Events, an event marketing company dedicated to the film industry, the festival includes a variety of unique experiences for its diverse audience. The idea—a joint effort with CommCinema and a team of other contributors—was to blend an outdoor movie-watching experience with live music and food from participating food trucks leading up to the screening.

How does it work? Just as summer gets underway, around May-August, movies are projected in designated outdoor spaces. You can get tickets at the entrance, ranging from $5 for 6-12 year-olds and $10 for adults. You can make reservations for $5 extra. Also, you can save a few bucks if you buy group tickets (4 tickets for $32). Doors open at 5 p.m., when you can enjoy delicious food truck goodies throughout the venue. In previous years, participating food trucks included Kogi and its famous tacos, Good Greek Grub, After School and No Jodas Kitchen. There’s food for all ages and tastes.

For the first hour-and-a-half, music bands take center stage. Every day features a different line-up of artists, just as every day presents a differnet movie.

This year, the first movie, Stand By Me, will be shown on May 25, with Corey Feldman as the special guest. We still don’t know which food trucks will be present that day, so stay tuned and get your tickets before they sell out!

Movies, food, action!

http://www.quericavida.com/en/inyourcity/street-food-cinema-festival/

By NYSF Contributor | New York Street Food

(credit: NYSF)

There are a lot of great savory food trucks out there, but there are just as many great dessert trucks. You generally don’t need as many ingredients or as much equipment for dessert as you need for lunch or dinner.

The Churros Calientes Truck is bright and colorful, but has that homey feel. It’s almost like a Mexican version of the Old Traditional Polish Cuisine Truck, with pictures of windows with shutters and curtains.

Our friend got two big, overstuffed empanadas, but we were looking for dessert.

That meant a Churro Grande for $5. There are 7 different toppings and fillings to choose from. One goes on top and one goes into the middle of the churro. We got a chocolate filling with dulce de leche on top, but there was also nutella, sweet condensed milk, guava, and a few other options on the menu.

(credit: NYSF)

It took a few minutes for them to prepare it to our specifications, but only 3-4 minutes, and it came out piping hot.

The churro was about 10″ long, was coated with sugar, had dulce de leche on top, and chocolate sauce oozing out the sides. We cut the churro in half to share with my friend, which made it ooze out even more.

This was a delicious dessert. The churro was crispy, even with the dulce de leche softening things a little, but the inside was still soft. That probably had to do with the gooey chocolate sauce in the middle.

(credit: NYSF)

The Churro Grande was big and rich, and half was plenty. If you have someone to share it with, half of one should be enough. If not, enjoy!

The Churros Calientes Truck can be located on twitter here and their website is here.

Our friend, who is an American of Mexican descent, said the empanadas were excellent too.

By Lou Bustamante | SF Weekly

<img class="size-full wp-image-53383" alt="It's your loss if you don't consider cream puffs proper food truck cuisine.
Before we started logging a serious number of hours and calories exploring food trucks, a friend asked what our favorite food truck was. “Oh, the cupcake truck,” we replied, and he asked again, annoyed, implying that cupcakes were not a valid food truck cuisine.

It made us think of the discussion you often hear in the music scene about DJs and their validity as musicians. Just like DJs sequence their rhythms ahead of time, dessert trucks make their wares in a kitchen before loading them on the truck. Perhaps if we referred to both as conductors (one with sweets, the other with beats) we could stop arguing, start dancing, and enjoying truck-dispensed sweet treats again, preferably at the same time.

The truck serves some seasonal varieties and a few anchor flavors like The Classic ($3.25, choux pastry puff, Madagascar bourbon vanilla cream, chocolate glaze), but the special Peanut Butter Cream Puff ($3.25) was the most irresistible. The crackling chocolate coating on top had just the right amount of give without shattering, and concentrated chocolate flavor that contrasted with the fluffy peanut butter filling. The cream stuffing was simultaneously velvety, gooey, and just peanut-buttery enough, without that eating-straight-from-the-jar intensity. Eating one is a messy affair, and trying to share one is advised only if you don’t mind crumbs and plops of cream on your clothes. They make mini sizes ($2 each) of some flavors, but not the peanut butter, because people are going to need their own full-size one.

The cream puffs dished out at the Pacific Puffs truck (part of the operation that includes two storefronts here in SF) are classic pâte à choux style morsels of crisp and light pastry. The dough is unique in that part of the preparation involves some stovetop cooking before baking, and that step can make large-scale production a challenge to get right. Done wrong and it’s dense and a dangerous object; done right and it’s the perfect vessel for sweet and delicious things. This type of pastry often ends up cut in half, stuffed with ice cream, drizzled with chocolate sauce, and served as profiteroles.

While cream puffs may not be made on the truck with sizzling smoke and aromas to entice you from across the parking lot, the show at this truck happens in each bite.
