Kadooks, the home of maduros (fried plantains) that are so good that we named them one of the 100 Essential Tucson Dishes, and Seis Curbside Kitchen, producer of award-winning gourmet tacos, are currently hanging out down the street from Weekly World Central on Hemisphere Loop, north of Valencia Road and near Palo Verde Road.

They’ll only be around for a little while longer, ’til 2 p.m., so if you’re jonesing for some excellent food truck chow, head down this way!

Jamie Castro cited family matters for taking the summer off. She hopes to come back with Jamie’s Bitchen Kitchen in the fall.

Tucson chef Jamie Castro sold her Jamie’s Bitchen Kitchen food truck to a “happy young man.”

In a Facebook posting on Thursday, Castro said the buyer is taking the truck to Montana “where there are hardly any food trucks and not all these Blood Sucking Fees lol!”

Castro early this month said she was taking a hiatus to attend to family matters and “may be back in the fall.” But she said then that she had put the truck up for sale.

DC Jumbie serves Puerto Rican pressed sandwiches and specialties.

A handful of Tucson food trucks set up in the parking lot of a small community park in Marana’s Continental Ranch community Saturday morning, a warmup to tonight’s roundup at the International Wildlife Museum.

This was the first time food Continental Ranch residents saw the trucks parked in the neighborhood. They normally set up in the parking lot of the now-closed Tower Theaters off Interstate 10 and Cortaro Road. The theater closed early in March and Harkins is planning to open in early May.

 Among the trucks Saturday were newcomers DC Jumbie, serving up tropical Puerto Rican inspired fare; and Fire Engine Dogs, a hot dog vendor housed in what looks like a toy firetruck that has quietly operated mostly on weekends for the past nine months.

 Catch them and Hellfire Pizza Co. from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the International Wildlife Museum, 4800 W. Gates Pass Road. Other trucks set to participate include Serial Grillers, Mustache Mike’s Italian Ice, The Rolling Chef and Street Delights.

Tucson’s food trucks will be setting up shop throughout the weekend starting tonight. Here’s where you can catch them.

• From 5 to 8 p.m. today, eight trucks including Jackie’s Food Court, Chef’s Kitchen and AF&F Kettle Korn will be at the Safford Elementary School, 155 E. 14th St., in the Armory Park Neighborhood downtown. The school’s orchestra will perform and proceeds benefit Safford’s orchestra program.

• From 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, the trucks will host the Kickoff Celebration of the Open Arists’ Studio Tour at the Steinfeld Warehouse Community Arts Center, Downtown, 101 W. Sixth St.

Patrons can’t get enough of The Rolling Chef’s tacos.

Spring is in the air and so is the sweet heavenly smells of barbecue coming from Smokin’ Hot BBQ and Stolen Recipe BBQ, two of 16 food trucks expected to be rounding up at Marana’s Tower Theatres.

The temperature could be in the low 70s when things get started at 4:30 today. It runs through 7:30 p.m. and includes live entertainment from Catfish and Weezie.

Also expected to participate in tonight’s roundup are: Serial Grillers; Mafooco; Jamie’s Bitchen Kitchen; Just Churros!; Hellfire Pizza; Pin-Up Pastries; Kadooks!; Rolling Chef; The Chill Shack Shaved Ice; Robdogs; Twisted Tandoor; Chef’s Kitchen; Trucking Good Cupcakes; Smokin’ Hot BBQ; and Desert Delights.

You Sly Dog, with its sometimes twisted take on the classic hot dog, has been part of the Tucson Food Truck Roundup scene since the beginning of the year.

Ramon Luquez saw the heap of metal in his friend’s driveway and had to have it.

A 1962 International Harvester Metro van with all its windows broken out, weeds sprouting inside and rust eating a big hole through the floorboard.

“I bought it right away. Then I was looking at it thinking. ‘What am I going to do with this?’”

Eleven years later — nine of them spent staring at the $2,200 relic in the driveway, the last two spent completely renovating it — Luquez has turned the historic vehicle into You Sly Dog, one of Tucson’s newest food trucks.

Luquez grills up hot dogs, from the ubiquitous Sonoran to some off-the chart creations that come straight from the imagination of someone rummaging through their refrigerator.

The food truck scene here in Tucson rivals those of much bigger cities, and is hardly limited to the common (albeit delicious) border fare you see scattered about every street corner. David Aguirre’s Tucson Food Truck Roundup gathers the area’s most venerated mobile restaurants in a congregation of flavors you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere, making a tastebud trip around the world as simple as hopping from truck to truck.

The Roundup is setting up camp tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at Window Depot, 5123 E. Speedway Blvd., with MaFooco, The Rolling Chef, Jackie’s Food Court, You Sly Dog, German Food Station, Kadooks!, Jamie’s Bitchen Kitchen and more in attendance. Kadooks! (pictured above) brings Costa Rican and Caribbean cuisine to the Southwest in a beach-inspired vessel with breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings. According to the truck’s Facebook page, they’re rolling out the new Kristine’s Empanadas, packed with bean, cheese, red onion and chorizo: only 20 of these babies will make it off the truck, so try to snag one before they’re gone.

Two more Roundup events are scheduled for this week: Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Human Society of Southern Arizona, 3450 N. Kelvin, and Sunday, Feb. 10, at Himmel Park near Speedway and Tucson Boulevard.

Paul Kukich is bringing BurgerRito to Tucson soon.

Native Coloradan Paul Kukich, a four-year Tucson transplant, is hoping to roll out his BurgerRitofood truck in the next week or two.

Kukich is waiting for his final health inspection to hit the streets and start dishing up a childhood favorite: Chubby’s original chili, with spicy Hatch Valley red chile powder, pork, green chiles and cheese — lots of cheese.

Like Chubby’s, a legendary Mexican restaurant in Denver, Kukich will serve the chili atop a quarter-pound cheeseburger.

His menu also includes two types of breakfast burritos and chili cheese fries. The burritos, which start at $4.50 and go as high as $7.50, can be served plain or smothered in chili.

Kukich, who came to Tucson to be closer to his young daughter four years ago, has spent almost a year working on BurgerRito. He said he will rotate parking the truck at three locations: 5601 S. Palo Verde Road; 5000 E. Valencia Road; and 333 W. Drachman St.

A dozen Tucson food trucks will round up at Brookline College from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, just in time for lunch.

Trucks participating: Jackie’s Food Court sweet potato fries; Hellfire Pizza Co.; Jamie’s Bitchen Kitchen Cuban sandwiches; Chef’s Kitchen serving up steamed mussels, shrimp bowls, falafel and seared tuna; Kadooks Costa Rican fare; Pin UP Pastries cupcakes; The Chill Shackscooping up shaved ice; Smokin’ Hot BBQ offering ribs and sliders;The German Food Station; pork bellies fromRolling Chef; MaFooco‘s signature kimchi tacos; cheese steaks from Serial Griller; and East Indian cuisine from The Twisted Tandoor.
