Although the food court in the Lory Student Center will be closed during renovations, students won’t be left hungry on campus.

To replace the food court, Lory Dining Services will relocate some businesses, but the rest will be replaced with food trucks parked on campus.

“It is important to provide alternative eating locations,” said Joyce Durol, associate director of Lory Dining Services. “That’s what started the food truck idea. They wanted to come on before so we were all excited. This gives additional food options because we are severely affected by the renovations.”

So far, there are five trucks participating that offer a variety of cuisines including hot dogs, hamburgers, soft-serve frozen fruit, Asian-fused meals, Italian sandwiches and breakfast dishes.

“We initially made contact with two trucks, and word got out (about what we were doing) and that is how we got to five,” Durol said. “(The food trucks) are like a subculture, so they will work to offer different things. It won’t be your average lunch fare.”

The trucks will be parked on South Pitkin Street in the Education Building’s parking lot. According to Durol, the Dining Services is working on getting tables and chairs to the parking lot to create a nice environment for the students to eat in.

One of the important factors with the food trucks is that they can operate separate of the university.

“What I like is that they are small entities,” Durol said. “they all are self contained units; they just pull up, work their day, and leave later because they will have obligations in Fort Collins.”

All of the food trucks that will come on campus currently operate around the Fort Collins community, but they are not in a permenant spot. Once at CSU, the trucks will be committed to a set Monday through Friday schedule.

As of now they will only accept credit, debit and cash. However, Dining Services is working on tapping into the university network to allow the trucks to take RamCash, said Durol.

Though the food court is closed, not all resturants will be shut down.

Subway and Spoons will both be down-sized to kiosks in Clark A.

For Spoons, they will be going from seven employees to only two or three. According to Spoons employee Rebecca Carleson, those who work there are not excited about the downsize, but they will be able to work at another Spoons location.

“(This move) will probably cut business in half, maybe a quarter,” Carleson said. “We are hoping that won’t happen, but we are also preparing that it will.”

“I feel like everything will pan out, but until then I am nervous,” added Carleson.

Bagel Place 2 will be one of the restaurants to stay open in the LSC. Due to the renovations, BP2 will be taking in the employees from Bagel Place 1, as well as expanding their hours.

“I think we wil have a lot more business because we will be next to the temporary RamSkeller, so we will have more traffic and people will know we are here,” Bree Ziola, a BP2 employee said. “I am definitely glad that BP2 is staying open. I love working there and I am glad I get to meet more people who work there.”

Once the student center is finished being renovated, the food trucks will be replaced with the food court inside the LSC.

“(The food truck owners) are extremely excited, and they know that (they will stay on campus) only a year,” Durol said. “But they are hoping they can get some loyalty customers from the process.”

Food trucks have invaded campus. Whether you’re in the mood for barbeque, panini, a deli sandwich, or sausage, there’s something for almost everyone at these kitchens on wheels.

Aramark, the company behind UNLV dining, has invited food trucks to campus to offer students more options and ease the lunchtime rush on its own on-campus venues. The trucks are on campus three to four days a week, and are typically open for business from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Some offer breakfast and vegetarian options.

Here’s the breakdown of the mobile dining options you’re likely to see on campus throughout the rest of the semester. Compiled by Grace Funcion and Noah Duran.

Pam’s Deli, Lucky’s, Ahli Baba’s and Big Daddy’s are the four food trucks that are parked on University Place near campus.

In most towns you can find at least one food truck or cart; usually it’s a dirty-water hot dog stand or an over-priced ice cream truck. But Burlington has a surprising number of diverse food trucks and carts.

Of course, eating food out of a truck is a hit or miss because other than the Skinny Pancake Airstream, they can be rather scathing from a quick look.

But I guarantee, if you do a double take, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

There are four trucks in total along University Place. Closest to MainSteet is Pam’s Deli. Walking toward Pearl Street, you’ll find Lucky’s,Ahli Baba’s and Big Daddy’s Food Truck.

The light blue truck in front of Williams is Ahli Baba’s. Their food truck serves to supplement their downtown storefront restaurant on Main Street next to the Flynn. Here you can find an assortment of pitas, from Chicken to Falafel, for a range between $6-$7.

A few steps down from Ahli Baba’s, also in front of Williams, is the big yellow and white Big Daddy’s Food Truck. Big Daddy’s has a restaurant downtown as well.

If you’re as broke as I am, their $1 cheese slices are deemed promising – but make sure to bring cash, because they slap you with a $5 credit card minimum.

If you’re looking for cheap breakfast food, Pam’s Deli will do the trick. They are a cash or charge joint.

As you approach Pam’s, a sign stating “Eggs Served All Day” proudly hangs above pictures of messy but delicious-looking combinations of egg, cheese and meat on bread. It is all cheap.

If it’s nearing noon and you find your stomach rumbling, I urge you to take the short walk to the small white box-like trailer, Lucky Chinese Food Truck.

Lucky’s is run by one man, Lep, with a large array of steaming pots filled with that day’s offerings.

“It’s just me. It always has been,” he said.

This is Lep’s twenty-first year on campus. “That’s a long time,” he said. He said he enjoys his small business and finds it very rewarding.

“I like to work here. I’m like a friend to students, which is very special to me,” he said.

Lucky’s Chinese Food Truck offers an individual and a combination menu. The individual menu is “a la carte” style featuring all of the classics: egg rolls, veggie fried rice and crab Rangoon – all for under $5.

The combination menu is where you will find entrees all paired with unique fried rice – and all for $5.

There’s also a $5 special every week including a stir-fry with a side of fried rice.

It may not be the most decadent and up-scale Chinese joint, but it is cheap and flawlessly satisfying.

Unlike other food trucks, Lucky’s stays all year round. “I still work here in the summer, to serve summer school and the professors,” he said.

This is Lep’s only occupation and he dedicates his energy every day to have a presence on campus.

“If I don’t work here, I don’t know what I’d do,” he said.

Lep was the most friendly of all of the food truck workers. When a customer came up to ask if he takes credit cards, he said “no” and sent them to one of his competitors, Pam’s.

The students appreciate him too.

One student in line greeted Lep like a good friend. “I like it a lot! Out of all of the vendors on campus, this is the one I come too,” said Junior Matt Rosenthal.

The food trucks on-campus have you covered.

http://www.vermontcynic.com/life/food-trucks-make-for-moveable-feast-1.2825882#.UXsetaJmiSo

From Montana beef burgers and authentic street tacos to meatloaf and mashed potatoes, the new University of Montana dining truck has it all.

The Galloping Griz, which opened this week, offers a breakfast and lunch service at the Missoula College Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The dining truck will also be on the UM campus outside of the Lommasson Center Thursdays through Sundays from 9 p.m. until midnight.

“Food trucks are the new trend,” UM concessions manager Ian Waetje said. “We want to be a part of that as well and be able to offer a variety of things.”

For the breakfast and lunch service at Missoula College, the dining truck will offer traditional American grill food such as burgers, chicken sandwiches and fresh salads. They’ll also offer daily specials like pulled pork sandwiches. The late night mountain campus menu will include traditional street food like tacos, quesadillas, chips with queso and more.

The late-night menu fits the average college student’s budget with four tacos for $5 and chips and queso dip for $3.

“The truth is, at night you’re going out, and there’s not a ton of money left over,” Donna Bauck, associate director for retail operations, said. “It’s made for those students that only have a buck or two in their pocket.”

The breakfast and lunch menus are slightly more expensive, with lunch specials running at $6.

In the future, dining services hopes to serve a wide variety of foods from many cultures and plans on doing more research and product development during the summer, Bauck said.

“A lot of it is going to come from feedback from students on campus, what they want to see and what drives them,” she said.

The truck will be used Fridays through Sundays during the day to serve food at other events like athletics and the Spring Thaw Festival on the Oval.

Waetje said the truck cost $167,000 and was originally purchased to avoid a $250,000 kitchen renovation at Missoula College.

“We’re able to have way more versatility by having the truck than to pay to do a renovation,” Waetje said.

All of the proceeds from the truck will stay with UM, Waetje said. UM dining services doesn’t use any of the general or state funds and has to generate its own money. A lot of the profits from the dining truck will go toward helping dining services stay self-sufficient.

Because the truck is brand new, projected revenue is hard to assess, Waetje said, but dining services hopes to have the truck paid off within the next few years.

Residential Programs has organized a Food Truck rally for the next couple of days! Starting today, from 12-2 on College Walk, there will be two different food trucks to offer you a break from whatever depressing dining hall food/instant ramen you’ve been subsisting on.

Today’s food trucks are GoBurger, a burger truck (with vegetarian options too) and Itizy, a gourmet ice cream truck which donates money to helping hungry orphans (or something).

Also, you should “come early to get discounts for their food by either giving compliments or completing daily missions.”

Spalding’s Student Development and Campus Life team welcomes back Food Truck Thursdays–a warm-weather, lunchtime event featuring food trucks from the Louisville area.

Every Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Library Lane (at the heart of the SU campus between York and Breckinridge Streets), the Spalding community and our neighbors can dine outdoors from a featured food truck of the week.

Last season, SU welcomed trucks such as Genius in a Box, Traveling Kitchen, San Diego Sandwich Works, among others. Food trucks will accept Spalding Dining Dollars as well as cash; some trucks also accept credit cards.

Johnson
The Butcher’s Son’s Santa Fe Sunset sandwich.

Sandwiched between the Language Building and Curry Hall, sits The Butcher’s Son. While students looking for a little kid with a blood-stained apron may be disappointed, people in search of a food truck serving comfort food will be ecstatic.

The Butcher’s Son’s sleek black truck makes the voyage from Dallas every Monday and Thursday, usually arriving sometime in the afternoon and staying until 8 or 9 p.m.

Most of their food is stupidly scrumptious, such as the Santa Fe Sunset sandwich, $7.99, complete with chicken sausage, chipotle Monterey Jack cheese, black bean salsa, fried jalapenos, tomatoes, onion and avocado between a Brioche bun.

The food even has a nice appearance, especially the Southwestern Chicken Quesadilla, $6.99, which features the same ingredients as the Santa Fe Sunset sandwich, switching out the tomatoes and jalapenos for caramelized onions.

While the signature items above are as good as the titles, the food garnering the most attention is probably the sliders. Each $3 slider is a little three-bite mini-sandwich, which acts as a perfect snack during an afternoon stroll. The best of the sliders is the Southern Hospitality, featuring fried chicken tenderloin, mashed potatoes and gravy stuffed in a roll.

Though the food is tasty, the prices are a little much, as The Butcher’s Son asks college students to dish out a nice chunk of change for some of their dishes. They also don’t offer a real “combo” deal – The Butcher’s 3-Way – but one that equates to the same price as ordering three separate sliders.

Tater tots are also available in a wide variety from regular tots at $2.25, lime tots for $2.50, VooDoo tots with beef, onions and curry powder for $4.62 and Nutter Butter tots, smothered in peanut butter, chocolate sauce and marshmallows for $2.75.

Overall, if you’ve got the cash, check out this truck because the price is worth the unusual sliders, and only makes a stop on campus twice a week.

By Katie Stiefel | The State News

With one food truck already roaming campus offering traditional meals, the Spartan Hospitality Group decided to add a second food truck to the mix this week.

The green and white Food for Thought truck is covered with illustrations of continents and quotes about food. The chefs plan to serve some international meals, although specific menu options have not been decided yet.

The decision for the menu theme was based off of MSU’s high international student population and the popularity of that food among all students. one of the chefs for the truck, Matt Wilson, said.

“(We) wanted to get that out there to the students and give them all a chance to try this sort of thing,” Wilson said.

The truck will be in action through the rest of the semester and into the summer, with current plans of running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Catering and attending weekend events aren’t out of the question either, Director of the Spartan Hospitality Group Joel Heberlein said.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-47299" alt="The Food for Thought food truck pictured on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, in front of Kellogg Center. This was the truck’s second day of serving food. Katie Stiefel/The State News

Heberlein believes Food for Thought will be different from traditional food trucks because of the many options and constantly changing menu the truck offers.

Tuesday, the truck served tomato soup, grilled cheese, caesar salad and pork wraps.
“Some trucks are known as barbecue trucks — we’re not that.” Heberlein said. “We might do it for a week or something, but I don’t know yet. It allows us to experiment and allows us more flexibility.”

Like its ever-evolving menu, the food truck was stationed outside Kellogg Center the past few days and will remain there for the rest of the week, but will set up in a different part of campus regularly, Wilson said.

Wilson said the new menu items and locations of the truck will be posted on the organization’s Twitter @MSUfoodtruck.

Special education junior Kenzie Gatewood and some of her coworkers from Kellogg were intrigued to test out the new truck yesterday for lunch.

“(I got a) grilled cheese and tomato soup because it has Dairy Store cheese on it, and I really like that,” Gatewood said.

“We got an email that there was going to be a discount today for people who work in the Kellogg Center, so we thought we would try it out.”

Heberlein is hoping the new food truck also will serve as a resource for faculty and staff to get lunch on campus.

“The ultimate goal is to add value to the Spartan experience by providing access to mobile food,” he said.

“It’s got to be self-sufficient financially, but just by providing a service that currently isn’t there we might find a niche.”

By Mike Desmond | WBFO 88.7

Credit theroamingbuffalo.org
Regulations are now set for food trucks like The Roaming Buffalo.

Buffalo’s array of food trucks received another year Tuesday as Common Council members approved new licenses and lower fees.

When council members went from a meeting of the Legislation Committee to a special meeting of the Council, they stayed silent and voted unanimously and quickly for the licenses. Under the new system, renewing operators will pay $500 dollars a year and new trucks will pay $800 effective Monday.

Roaming Buffalo owner Chris Taylor says that will bring out new truck operators who have been waiting to see what the fees would be. Taylor says the initial operating fee was a jolt when the city legalized the trucks.

“I didn’t expect the $1,000 fee when I first started, so it hurt us for a while. We had to hold off on buying certain things for the truck that would help my business. Hiring employees was definitely put off with the higher fees,” Taylor said.

There was much discussion during the committee meeting, with lawyers and restaurateurs dueling over how well the food trucks were doing and how much they are affecting brick and mortar restaurants.

The move didn’t pass without protest. Restaurateur Tucker Curtin told the Legislation Committee there are safety risks with the trucks.

“These folks are carrying around two 100-pound tanks of propane. This can become very dangerous. There’s been a number of explosions across the country. We’ve had explosions here with propane tanks in residential areas, as well as the four blocks that were taken out 10 or 20 years ago,” Curtin said.

Councilmember Joe Golombek says both sides had worked out their differences.

“The gist of it is is that it keeps a good ordinance that has worked reasonably well over the past 15 months. It keeps it moving forward and it lowers the fee by 50 percent so that as of April 1, instead of paying $1,000 the food trucks for renewals would have to pay $500,” Golombek said.

Food truck operators say this gives some certainty and also cuts their fees. Several new trucks are apparently ready to join those already on the road, now that costs and rules are clear.

UDS purchased the state-of-the-art mobile kitchen after hearing requests for food service at MC’s West Campus and for late-night service on the UM campus.

“You can’t miss this beauty,” said UDS Director Mark LoParco. “When you see the Galloping Griz, stop over and give us a try. The late-night menu will feature authentic street foods, and I’m sure you will like what we’re cooking.”
