MOUNT DORA — The city will resume the popular downtown Food Truck Bazaar in the new year, starting with the first one scheduled on Jan. 17.
The Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the monthly events, planned for every third Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Alexander Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues.
Food caravans have been extremely popular at several Central Florida locations and Mount Dora officials did a test run of four such events. Fans like the unique variety of foods available, from ethnic fusion to specialty desserts.
In Lake County, Clermont and Leesburg also will resume their food-truck events for the new year. Clermont’s first event is set for 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, while the next Leesburg event is scheduled for 5:30 to 9 p.m. Jan. 12 at Towne Square.
For Mount Dora, up to 1,500 attended each event, bringing people who also visited downtown shops and restaurants, organizers said.
Local businesses agreed to continue the events and the chamber will buy about 10 barricades to be used to keep traffic and make it a pedestrian-only zone during the event, according to Cathy Hoechst, chamber president. The chamber also will pay for other costs related to city employees needed for traffic control, public safety and parks and recreation.
At a recent city meeting, Councilman Ed Rowlett questioned why pets are being allowed at the events, when they are normally barred at the city’s larger tourist draws like the Mount Dora Art Festival. Organizers had asked for permission to have dogs at the last event.
The presence of pets didn’t cause any problems among visitors during the previous event, police Chief Randy Scoggins told council members.
Council members approved the event schedule without any further changes.
Events are scheduled for: Jan. 17, Feb. 21, March 21, April 18, May 16, June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19.
