SHFT Mobile Kitchen Classroom is a new nonprofit organization that provides high school students in New York City with the opportunity to learn basic cooking skills and prepare healthy and affordable meals. The nonprofit organization is the first charitable effort of SHFT (shft.com), a multi-media platform founded by Peter Glatzer and Adrian Grenier.
SHFT MKC will operate a fully-equipped, mobile teaching kitchen that will travel to schools, health fairs, and other sites in order to teach about food, health, and sustainability.
SHFT Mobile Kitchen Classroom addresses the space limitations faced by many public schools. With our mobile kitchen classroom, any school can offer its students classes in healthy cooking and nutrition education regardless of building or financial constraints. A single truck can also serve multiple sites, increasing the project’s potential impact. This is especially important given that close to 40% of the city’s children are overweight or obese, and national childhood obesity rates have tripled over the past three decades. The need for cooking and health education at the high school level is great. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the percentage of adolescents who suffer from obesity has more than tripled over the last three decades, from five to eighteen percent. At MKC, we are committed to combating childhood obesity and putting our nation’s youth on the path to health independence.

All donations will help create inspiring educational opportunities, combat childhood obesity, and empower our nation’s youth to make healthier decisions, for themselves, their communities, and the planet.
